The rising sign is the lagna, and it needs a clock

The ascendant changes sign in about two hours. A birth remembered as morning can be one lagna at 6:00 and another at 8:00. Houses are counted from that sign, so the 7th and the 10th move with it. A Sun sign does not.

The place matters because the horizon depends on latitude and because the clock time is local. Daylight saving changes the offset in zones that use it. India does not use daylight saving, so a Mumbai or Delhi birth stays on Asia/Kolkata. A New York birth in July is not the same offset as a New York birth in January.

If you only have a date, say the lagna is unknown. Do not let a form insert noon and then describe that ascendant as yours.

English-language apps often show a tropical rising sign. This site shows a sidereal lagna. The same Universal Time can produce two names. The difference is the ayanamsa, the same gap that moves Sun signs between tropical and sidereal zodiacs.

Co-Star and similar products rank in app stores for birth chart and natal chart, and their rising sign is in that tropical family. Quoting their rising sign next to this lagna without saying tropical or sidereal starts a false argument.

Pick one zodiac for the houses. This tool's houses are sidereal. Read them that way.

The lagna is the 1st house. The other houses follow in order. Marriage questions look at the 7th from that lagna, and at its lord, and at D9. Career questions look at the 10th from that lagna. If the lagna is wrong, those houses are wrong even when the planet's sign in the sky is right.

The Moon's sign can be known more loosely from the day. The house the Moon occupies cannot. Mangal Dosha, which uses Mars's house, moves if the lagna moves. An Ashtakoota score that depends on the Moon's nakshatra can survive a small time error. A house-based dosha check may not.

Test a doubtful time at the edges. If the lagna sign holds, continue. If it flips, settle the clock before you talk about marriage or work.

Generate the chart twice, twenty minutes apart, if the family argues about the minute. Note whether the lagna degree crosses a sign boundary. Twenty minutes will not always flip a sign. Two hours often will.

Then read the chart you trust: lagna, Moon and nakshatra, 7th lord, 10th lord, dasha. Transits come after that. A rising-sign paragraph from a website that never asked your time is a Sun-sign column in another costume.

Rising sign, ascendant, lagna, and Lagna Rashi are searched as if they were four products. On a sidereal chart they point at one fact: the eastern sign at that minute, in the Lahiri zodiac. The Sanskrit label does not create a second ascendant.

Big three and sun moon rising are western phrasings of Sun, Moon, and ascendant. You can list those three from this chart. Label them sidereal. Otherwise you will paste them onto a tropical screenshot and think the software failed.

There is no Ahrefs export for those phrases here. They are the words on public app listings and on the forms people already use. The calculation does not change because the English name changed.
