Your Sun sign and your Moon sign are different facts

The Sun stays in a sign for about a month. A newspaper can assign a paragraph to everyone born in that span and never ask for a clock time. That paragraph is a Sun-sign column. It does not know your lagna, your Moon, or your dasha.

The Moon changes sign in about two and a half days. Two people with the same tropical Sun sign often have different Moon signs, and the sidereal Moon sign can differ again from the tropical one because of the ayanamsa.

If a form asks for your sign and does not say Sun or Moon, or tropical or sidereal, the answer is ambiguous. On this site, say moon sign when you mean the Moon's sidereal sign.

The Moon's sign is the rashi. The Moon's nakshatra is the finer slice, and Vimshottari dasha starts from that nakshatra. A reading that skips the Moon and talks only about the Sun is not using the timing method this chart is built for.

The Moon also matters in matching. Several Ashtakoota kootas depend on the nakshatra. A guna milan run on the wrong Moon is a score of the wrong row.

You still read the Sun. It is one graha among the set, in a house and a sign, with a lord. It is not the whole chart, and it is not the lagna unless the ascendant happens to fall in the same sign.

A common mix-up is to keep the tropical Sun sign from an app like Co-Star and then ask for a Vedic moon sign from a Kundli. You can learn both. You should not add them as if they were calculated in one zodiac.

Lahiri is the ayanamsa here. The Swiss Ephemeris supplies the positions. If your tropical Sun is late in a sign, the sidereal Sun is often in the previous sign. That is the usual size of the gap, not a personal exception.

This page will not tell you which sign your Moon is in. That requires the birth date at least, and a time and place if you want the houses as well. The Moon's sign for the day can be computed from the date and a zone. The house it occupies cannot.

Ask what the Moon's sign and nakshatra are on the Lahiri chart, then which mahadasha that nakshatra starts. Ask which house the Moon occupies from the lagna you calculated, not from a Sun-sign wheel.

For marriage, do not stop at the Moon. Open the 7th house, its lord, and D9. For work, open the 10th. The Moon's condition colours the chart. It does not replace those houses.

If two relatives give you two Sun signs, write down which app and which zodiac each one used. The argument is often tropical versus sidereal, not two positions of the Sun on the same day.

Generate the Kundli with date, time, and place. Read the Sun's sign and the Moon's sign as separate lines. Read the nakshatra under the Moon. Then read the dasha list, which is there because of that nakshatra, not because of the Sun sign in a magazine.

Bring the birth time if you have it. Without it, you can still talk about the Moon's sign for that day with less confidence about the exact nakshatra near a boundary, and you should not trust the lagna at all.
