When a Yoga Pays Its Benefit
The benefit of a yoga is not a glow on the chart. It is the years of its lords, and only the houses those lords actually rule.

Raja yoga and dhana yoga
In Jyotish a yoga is a combination, not a posture. A raja yoga joins a lord of a kendra, houses 1, 4, 7, and 10, with a lord of a trikona, houses 1, 5, and 9. Its benefit is status and responsibility during the mahadasha of those lords. A dhana yoga joins the 2nd lord with the 11th lord, and its benefit is money in those lords' years. A yoga that sits in the chart during an unrelated period is a locked benefit.
The 1st lord can count as both kendra and trikona, which is why the lagna lord appears in so many status combinations.
The yogakaraka shortcut
One planet can form the raja yoga alone by owning both kinds of house. Saturn does this for Taurus and Libra. Mars does it for Cancer and Leo. Venus does it for Capricorn and Aquarius. Their mahadashas, 19, 7, and 20 years, are the benefit periods for those lagnas. A debilitated yogakaraka, Venus in Virgo for a Capricorn lagna, pays a thinner benefit than the name suggests.
Viparita raja yogas, Harsha, Sarala, and Vimala, pay through dusthana lords in other dusthanas, a rise by crisis. The benefit is real and not comfortable.
Navamsa and the false benefit
A yoga whose lords fall in the Navamsa is advertised more than it pays. Vargottama lords pay more steadily. Transits can deliver a month of the benefit inside the right dasha and cannot start the yoga early.
Do not collect yogas. One clean raja yoga in period is worth more than five names with no lord running. The benefit is the house result, in those years, at the strength the signs allow.
Frequently asked questions
When does a yoga give results?
In the mahadasha or antardasha of the planets that form it. Outside those years it is potential.
What is a raja yoga?
A kendra lord joined to a trikona lord. A single yogakaraka, such as Saturn for Taurus, forms it by lordship alone.
Does a long list of yogas mean a better chart?
No. Dignity, the Navamsa, and a running dasha decide whether any one of them pays.
