The Working Principles of a Jyotish Reading

The principles are few and strict. Count from the lagna. Time from the Moon's star. Judge the lord by sign, house, and dasha.

Two starting points

A Jyotish reading starts in two places and nowhere else. The lagna is the sign on the eastern horizon, and every house number is counted from it. The Moon's nakshatra chooses the opening Vimshottari mahadasha, a 120-year sequence whose lords have fixed lengths, from the Sun's 6 years to Venus's 20. Wisdom here is refusing to answer a career question from the Sun sign or a timing question from a weekday. The 10th from the lagna is the career. The dasha of the 10th lord is when it moves.

The chart is sidereal. A tropical rising sign is a different zodiac and a different count.

Dignity before the story

A planet is exalted, in its own sign, or debilitated, and those states are not moods. The Sun is exalted in Aries and fallen in Libra. Venus is exalted in Pisces and fallen in Virgo. Saturn is exalted in Libra and fallen in Aries. A fallen 10th lord does not become a king because the house is a kendra. A yogakaraka, one planet owning a kendra and a trikona, outranks a natural benefic who owns only dusthanas.

The Navamsa is the second dignity. Vargottama holds. A reversal in the D9 qualifies the birth-chart compliment. Marriage is not finished until the 7th lord and Venus are seen there.

The dasha is the ethics

Promising a yoga without its mahadasha is the common failure. A raja yoga of a kendra lord and a trikona lord acts in those lords' years. A transit can trigger and cannot replace. Sade sati is Saturn's transit from the Moon, about seven and a half years, and it is not Saturn's 19-year mahadasha.

The principles exclude invented degrees, invented birth times, and medical outcomes from a house. The 8th is the longevity house and does not print a death year on a public page. Hold the count, the clock, and the dignity. The rest is commentary.

Frequently asked questions

Where do house numbers start?

At the lagna, the sidereal rising sign. The 7th and the 10th are counted from there, not from the Sun or the Moon.

Where does timing start?

At the Moon's nakshatra. Its lord is the opening mahadasha, with a balance set by the Moon's place in the star.

What qualifies a yoga?

The lords' dignity, their Navamsa, and the mahadasha that actually runs. A yoga outside its period is only potential.
