Why the Atmakaraka Is Called King
King means first in the Jaimini rank, the planet farthest along in its own rashi. It is not a second name for the Sun.

Highest degree in the sign
The atmakaraka is the planet that has traveled farthest inside its own rashi, the highest degree among the grahas considered. Jaimini method ranks the chara karakas by that remaining longitude: atmakaraka first, then amatyakaraka, and on down to the darakaraka, the lowest, who signifies the spouse in that system. The atmakaraka is called the king because the other karakas are arranged beneath it. The Sun can be the atmakaraka, and so can Saturn or Venus. The title is the rank, not the lamp.
This page will not invent a degree for a person. The rule is enough: compare how far each planet has moved through its sign, and the greatest is king.
Karakamsa is its navamsa
The sign the atmakaraka occupies in the Navamsa is the karakamsa, and a chart is read from that sign for the soul's direction in Jaimini practice. A king in a fallen navamsa is a different counsel from a king in its exaltation navamsa. The birth-chart house of the atmakaraka still matters in Parashari reading: an atmakaraka in the 10th is a public soul-significator, in the 12th a more withdrawn one.
Vimshottari does not start from the atmakaraka. It starts from the Moon's nakshatra. You can be in Saturn mahadasha while Venus is king of the karakas. The two systems answer different questions.
Not the lagna lord by default
The lagna lord carries the 1st house. The atmakaraka carries the Jaimini soul-rank. They coincide only when the lagna lord also has the highest degree. Treating every lagna lord as king blurs Parashari house lordship with Jaimini's degree order.
Rahu is included in some eight-karaka versions when a tie or a method calls for it, and excluded in the seven-karaka version. Say which list you used. The king is the top of that list, and the darakaraka at the bottom is the spouse significator, a useful second fact from the same ranking.
Frequently asked questions
Is the atmakaraka always the Sun?
No. It is whichever graha has the highest degree inside its sign. The Sun wins only when the Sun is that planet.
What is the karakamsa?
The Navamsa sign of the atmakaraka. Jaimini reads from that sign for the soul significator's deeper chart.
Does the atmakaraka start the dasha?
No. Vimshottari starts from the Moon's nakshatra. The atmakaraka is a Jaimini rank, not the 120-year clock.
