The Sun's Strongest Position
Sign and direction agree when an exalted Sun sits in the 10th. That geometry is a Cancer ascendant, not a universal Leo prize.
Aries in the 10th
The Sun's best sign is Aries, its exaltation. Its directional strength is the 10th house, shared with Mars. The position that satisfies both is an Aries Sun in the 10th, which means the lagna is Cancer. The Sun then rules Leo, the 2nd house, so the exalted career Sun is also the lord of family, speech, and savings. That is the cleanest single answer to best position. Leo, the Sun's own sign, is the next dignity, and it is best when it falls in an angle, especially the 1st or the 10th.
Libra is debilitation. A Sun in the 10th in Libra has the right house and the wrong sign. For a Capricorn lagna that is exactly the case.
The 6-year period
The Sun's mahadasha lasts 6 years, the shortest among the seven visible planets. A best-position Sun spends a brief, bright period on authority and on the 2nd house if the lagna is Cancer. It does not dominate a life the way Saturn's 19 years can. The Sun's antardashas inside other mahadashas are often when the exalted 10th actually shows, if the longer lord allows it.
Combustion around this Sun can muffle Mercury and Venus. The Sun being best does not make its neighbors comfortable.
Kendra is not automatically the 10th
A Sun in the 1st in Leo, Leo lagna, is the lagna lord in the lagna, which is a powerful life direction and not the double condition of exaltation plus 10th-house digbala. A Sun in the 9th can bless the father and dharma and still lack directional strength. Rank them honestly: Aries in the 10th first for the double rule, Leo in a kendra next, and a debilitated Sun in Libra last, even in the 10th.
The Navamsa can dethrone a birth-chart exaltation. Check it before you call the position final.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the Sun exalted?
In Aries. Directional strength is the 10th. Both together require Cancer lagna.
What does that Cancer Sun rule?
The 2nd house, Leo. Career and the family purse share the exalted Sun.
Is a 10th-house Sun in Libra still best?
The house has directional strength and the sign is debilitated. Dignity loses. It is not the Aries case.
