Why a Zodiac Sign Cannot Pick Your Stone

Birthday-stone tables skip the lagna. The 10th lord of one person is the 6th lord of another who shares a Sun sign. Their stones cannot match.

The sign and the lagna are different doors

The gemstone that belongs on a hand is the one whose planet the Lahiri chart has named, and a zodiac label never completes that naming. A Sun sign, even a sidereal one, is only the Sun's rashi. The lagna changes about every two hours, and daylight saving can change it again by shifting the zone offset used before the Julian day. Two people born on the same calendar day in the same city can have neighboring lagnas and opposite 10th houses. The career stone, if there is one, follows the 10th lord. Those two people do not share a 10th lord. A table that prints 'Leo: ruby' has collapsed all of that into the Sun.

The same Sun, different lords

Take a sidereal Leo Sun. One native is Cancer lagna: the 10th lord is Mars, and Mars is also the yogakaraka, so coral is the career candidate if the dasha agrees. Another is Virgo lagna: the 10th lord is Mercury, so the candidate is emerald, and Mars for that lagna rules the 3rd and the 8th, a poor planet to wake casually. Both people would be handed a ruby by a zodiac table because the Sun is in Leo. Ruby would be backing the Sun, who rules the 2nd for Cancer and the 12th for Virgo. One is a money house. The other is loss and foreign residence. The table cannot see the fork.

What to ask for instead

Ask which planet rules the house you care about, whether that planet is a functional benefic for your lagna, and whether the Vimshottari dasha already running gives it a bhukti. For marriage, confirm the 7th lord in the D9 Navamsa before anyone mentions diamond. For conflict and debt, notice if the recommended stone's planet rules the 6th, because 'helpful' and '6th lord' often disagree. The nine correspondences stay what they are: ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, blue sapphire for Saturn, hessonite for Rahu, cat's eye for Ketu. The zodiac column is the part to retire. The naming of the planet is the part to keep.

Frequently asked questions

Is my Moon sign a better guide than my Sun sign?

The Moon sign starts the Vimshottari dasha and describes the mind. It still does not pick a stone. The lagna and the named planet do.

What if a jeweler insists on the birth month?

Birth month fixes a season of the Sun. It does not fix the lagna lord. Decline the table and keep the chart.

Can two family members share a stone?

Only if both charts name the same planet for a reason that exists in each lagna. A shared surname is not that reason.
