The Nakshatra Named for Rama's Birth

The nakshatra named for Sri Ramachandra's birth is Punarvasu. The Ramayana's birth verse places him on Chaitra navami, under the nakshatra whose deity is Aditi, which is Punarvasu, with Karka, Cancer, as lagna. Punarvasu's Vimshottari lord is Jupiter. A Moon in Punarvasu would open life in Jupiter mahadasha, a balance of Jupiter's 16 years. The tradition also speaks of planets in exaltation. This page will not assign those exaltations as if a timed horoscope had been computed in Swiss Ephemeris.

Punarvasu straddles the end of Gemini and the start of Cancer. The epic's Cancer lagna does not by itself prove which pada of Punarvasu held the Moon. The pada is not stated as a degree.

Punarvasu's image is a return, the light coming back. Its lord Jupiter ties it to teaching, restoration, and dharma, which is why the star is remembered as fitting for Rama without needing a modern rectification. The sharp nakshatras, Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Mula, are a different class. Punarvasu is not in that sharp set.

Jupiter exalted in Cancer falls inside the same region of the sky as the Cancer portion of Punarvasu. That is a sign fact about Jupiter's exaltation, not a claim that a computed Jupiter was at a stated degree in the epic.

A Moon in Punarvasu today starts a Jupiter balance and says nothing else about Rama. Your lagna may not be Cancer. If it is not, Punarvasu is not in your 1st house. For a Capricorn lagna, Cancer is the 7th, and a Punarvasu Moon would be a 7th-house Moon under Jupiter's star.
