Western Charts and Vedic Charts

The same birth can show two rising signs. One is tropical. The Jyotish lagna is sidereal, and the dasha clock hangs on the Moon.

Two zodiacs, one horizon

Western astrology measures signs from the tropical zodiac, tied to the equinox. Vedic astrology measures them from the sidereal zodiac. Jyothish SI uses the Lahiri ayanamsa, so the lagna is the sidereal sign on the eastern horizon, not the tropical sign a Western chart prints as the ascendant. The two zodiacs differ by that ayanamsa, enough that the Sun sign and the rising sign often change. This page will not print a degree for the gap. The practical result is the point: do not mix the signs.

The birth city and the zone offset, including daylight saving, affect both calculations. They do not erase the zodiac difference.

Timing and the extra planets

Vedic timing of a life is Vimshottari dasha, counted from the Moon's nakshatra, a 120-year sequence. Western timing leans on transits and progressions. A Vedic transit still matters, and it matters inside the mahadasha, not instead of it. Rahu and Ketu, the lunar nodes, are full grahas in the Jyotish chart, with mahadashas of 18 and 7 years. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are not part of that sequence.

Aspects differ too. Every planet aspects the opposite sign. Mars also aspects the 4th and 8th from itself. Jupiter aspects the 5th and 9th. Saturn aspects the 3rd and 10th. Those are sign aspects, not orb-by-degree aspects.

What you keep from each

If you learned your Sun, Moon, and rising from a tropical app, recompute them in the sidereal chart before you read a 7th house or a mahadasha. The 7th in a tropical chart can be a different sign from the 7th in the kundli. Marriage, in Jyotish, is that sidereal 7th, its lord, Venus, and the Navamsa. The Navamsa does not exist in the usual Western three-sign summary.

A free kundli from the birth city will show the sidereal lagna. Use that chart for house questions. Leave the tropical placements in the system that defined them.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Vedic rising sign different?

The Vedic lagna uses the sidereal zodiac and the Lahiri ayanamsa. A Western ascendant uses the tropical zodiac.

Do outer planets run Vimshottari?

No. The sequence is Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, and Mercury.

Are Vedic aspects the same as Western orbs?

No. Jyotish uses whole-sign aspects: the 7th for all, plus Mars 4 and 8, Jupiter 5 and 9, Saturn 3 and 10.
