Mahadasha, Antardasha, or Transit?
Transits feel urgent because they move this month. The mahadasha decides whether this month is allowed to matter.

Three clocks, one order
The mahadasha is the long lord, from the Sun's 6 years to Venus's 20. The antardasha is the guest lord inside those years, sized by multiplying the two periods and dividing by 120. A transit, or gochara, is a planet moving now across a sign, judged most often from the natal Moon. The order of importance is mahadasha, then antardasha, then transit.
A Jupiter transit over the 7th does not marry a person whose mahadasha and antardasha have nothing to do with the 7th lord or Venus. The transit can trigger a wedding when those lords are already running.
Why transits steal the conversation
Saturn's transit is slow and public, and sade sati, Saturn through the 12th, 1st, and 2nd from the Moon, lasts about seven and a half years. People feel it and forget that Venus mahadasha may be the actual 20-year container. Saturn transiting the 10th during Jupiter mahadasha gives a Jupiter-flavored career event with Saturn's weight, not a pure Saturn life. If Saturn is also the mahadasha lord, the transit and the dasha agree and the months feel larger.
WhatsApp transit alerts can mark those moving planets. They do not replace the Vimshottari lord already in force.
Antardasha is the forgotten middle
Inside one mahadasha the texture changes eight times after the opening slice. Rahu-Venus and Rahu-Saturn are both Rahu mahadasha, 18 years, and they do not feel alike. Blaming the transit for a change that coincides with a new antardasha misnames the clock.
When you ask what matters more, use the practical test. If the transit passes and the topic remains, the dasha was the cause. If the topic flares only while a slow planet crosses one house and then drops, the transit was the trigger inside a willing dasha.
Frequently asked questions
Can a transit overrule the mahadasha?
It can time an event the mahadasha and antardasha already allow. It does not create a result those lords do not carry.
How is an antardasha length found?
Multiply the mahadasha years by the antardasha lord's years and divide by 120. That is the sub-period inside the longer run.
From where are transits counted?
Usually from the natal Moon, as in sade sati. House results for the life still begin at the lagna.
