What Lagna Means in Astrology
Lagna is the rising sign. It is the 1st house, the body, and the point from which every other house number is taken.

The sign on the eastern horizon
Lagna is the rashi rising on the eastern horizon at the minute of birth. That sign becomes the 1st house. The 2nd is the next sign, and so on around the twelve. A planet in Leo is in the 10th only if the lagna is Scorpio. Change the lagna and every house number changes, while the planets stay in the same rashis.
The lagna lord is the planet that rules the 1st. Its house and sign describe how the person carries the life. Mars for Aries and Scorpio, Venus for Taurus and Libra, Mercury for Gemini and Virgo, the Moon for Cancer, the Sun for Leo, Jupiter for Sagittarius and Pisces, Saturn for Capricorn and Aquarius.
It moves faster than the Moon
The lagna changes about every two hours, so two people born on the same date can have opposite rising signs. The Moon may be shared. The houses will not be. This is why a birth time is not a detail. Jyothish SI uses the Lahiri ayanamsa and the birth city. The zone offset, in minutes, is applied before the Julian day. Daylight saving changes that offset and can change the lagna.
India's cities use Asia/Kolkata, UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes, with no daylight saving. A birth dated only as evening, without a city, is not a lagna.
Lagna is not the Moon sign
The Moon sign is the mind and the start of the Vimshottari dasha, through the nakshatra. The lagna is the body and the house count. Chandra kundali turns the Moon into a temporary 1st for transits such as sade sati. It does not demote the lagna. Predictions that start from the Sun sign skip both.
A strong lagna lord in a kendra, in own sign or exaltation, gives the chart a spine. A lagna lord in the 8th or 12th, or debilitated, makes the 1st house work harder, especially in that lord's mahadasha. The Navamsa of the lagna lord is the second opinion.
Frequently asked questions
Is the lagna the same as the Moon sign?
No. The lagna is the rising sign and the 1st house. The Moon sign is the mind and the source of the dasha.
How often does the lagna change?
About every two hours. An approximate birth time can place the rising sign in the wrong rashi.
Which planet rules the lagna?
The lord of the rising sign: Mars, Venus, Mercury, the Moon, the Sun, Jupiter, or Saturn, depending on the sign.
