What the Navamsa or D9 Chart Is
The D9 is the marriage varga and the second opinion on every planet. It is built from the same birth time as the lagna chart.

Nine parts of each sign
The Navamsa, or D9, divides each rashi into nine equal parts and maps those parts into signs of their own. It is the divisional chart used for the spouse and for the strength of a planet after the lagna chart has spoken. A planet can look exalted in the birth chart and fallen in the Navamsa, or the reverse. Marriage judgments that ignore the D9 are reading only the public half of Venus and the 7th lord.
The D9 lagna is often a different sign from the D1 lagna. Houses in the Navamsa are counted from that D9 lagna. Saturn in the 10th of the Navamsa is a D9 statement, not a second copy of the birth 10th.
Vargottama and cancellation talk
A planet in the same sign in the birth chart and the Navamsa is vargottama, and it is treated as steadier than a planet that changes sign. That is a strength, not a promise of ease. A vargottama Saturn is a very Saturnian Saturn.
Debilitation in the birth chart is not automatically cancelled by a pretty Navamsa. Cancellation of debilitation has its own rules. What the D9 does provide is a second dignity. Readers who say the Navamsa erases a fallen planet are overselling the varga. Paid plans on Jyothish SI add the extra divisional charts beyond the basic kundli. The D9 still depends on an accurate birth time, because a few minutes can change a navamsa.
How it is used in a match
For marriage, read the 7th lord and Venus in the birth chart, then find those same planets in the D9 and read the D9 7th. Agreement between the two charts supports a wedding in the dasha of the 7th lord or Venus. Contradiction says the birth chart was optimistic.
The D9 is not gun milan. Ashtakoot scores Moon nakshatras and can total 36 without ever opening this varga. A couple can score well and still show a broken Venus in one Navamsa. Do the Moon screen and the D9. They answer different questions.
Frequently asked questions
Does the Navamsa replace the birth chart?
No. The lagna chart sets the houses and the life topics. The D9 tests strength and the spouse.
What does vargottama mean?
The planet occupies the same sign in the birth chart and the Navamsa, which is treated as steadier strength.
Why does a small time error matter?
Each navamsa is a ninth of a sign. A few minutes of birth time can move the D9 lagna and a planet's navamsa.
