What a Maha Yoga Means

A maha yoga, in the way the phrase is used, is a raja yoga: the lord of a kendra joined with the lord of a trikona. Kendras are the 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th. Trikonas are the 1st, 5th, and 9th. The join can be a conjunction, an exchange of signs, or, in some readings, a mutual aspect. The 1st lord qualifies for both lists, which is why the lagna lord is so often part of status yogas.

There is not a separate planet combination whose only name is maha. If a website lists one recipe and calls it the maha yoga, ask which kendra lord and which trikona lord are involved. Without those houses, the name is empty.

When one planet owns a kendra and a trikona together, that planet is yogakaraka and forms the yoga by itself. Saturn does this for Taurus, ruling the 9th and 10th, and for Libra, ruling the 4th and 5th. Mars does it for Cancer, ruling the 5th and 10th, and for Leo, ruling the 4th and 9th. Venus does it for Capricorn and Aquarius. Their mahadashas are the maha-yoga periods for those lagnas.

A natural benefic owning only kendras, such as Jupiter for Gemini, is the kendradhipati problem, not an automatic maha yoga.

The yoga gives status, responsibility, or reach in the mahadasha of the planets that form it. A beautiful conjunction of the 9th lord and the 10th lord stays quiet during a dasha of an unrelated planet in the 3rd. Strength still matters. A raja yoga whose lords are debilitated and fallen in the Navamsa is a thin yoga. A raja yoga whose lords are exalted or vargottama has something to spend.

Do not price the yoga. The chart does not state an income. It states that the kendra and the trikona are in conversation, and names the years of that conversation.
