Gun milan scores eight kootas that add to 36. A result of 36 means each one is at its maximum: Varna 1, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, and Nadi 8. Nadi and Bhakoot are the heavy pair. You cannot reach 36 if the couple shares a nadi, because that koota would contribute 0 instead of 8, or if Bhakoot is a 2/12, 5/9, or 6/8 Moon-sign relationship that scores 0.

The inputs are the two birth nakshatras of the Moon. The lagnas are not in the sum.
