Kaalratri on Saptami of Navratri

Saptami belongs to the dark, protective goddess of the seventh night. The fear in her image is part of the form. It is not a curse to perform.

The seventh night

Kaalratri is worshipped on Shukla Saptami, the seventh bright tithi of Navratri, and she is the fierce night among the nine forms. The name joins kala, time or darkness, with ratri, night. That night would be miscounted if you placed her on Ashtami, which belongs to Mahagauri, or on Navami, which belongs to Siddhidatri and to Kanya Pujan. She is shown dark, with loose hair, often with a sword, riding a donkey. The donkey is the detail that separates her from Kushmanda's lion and from Shailputri's bull. Saptami occurs in Chaitra and in Ashwin. The civil date is whatever the panchang says this year. Darkness here is an icon, not an instruction to harm anyone, and not a transit of a malefic. Worship of this form is protective in the Devi tradition. It is not a ritual against a named enemy, and no such use will be described.

Fierce is not the same as cruel

The Navadurga include gentle and severe faces because the text they accompany, the Durga Saptashati, includes battles, especially the later charita against Shumbha and Nishumbha, as well as the earlier battles. Households do not have to stage a battle. They keep a lamp, a fast if that is their rule, and the name of the seventh form. Some communities treat Saptami as one of the public Durga Puja days in the autumn, when the festivities have become civic. The spring Saptami is quieter and no less the same tithi. Colour charts that assign black or blue to her are, again, seasonal. Her darkness is already in the iconography. You do not need a dress code to recognise the day. If a tithi spans two midnights, follow the panchang your family uses rather than a headline that picked the more dramatic date.

Do not read her as a person's 8th house

Kala is also Saturn's and the 8th house's language, and it is an easy mistake to turn Kaalratri's night into a prediction of fear, death, or a sudden break. The festival does not activate the 8th house. Longevity is a specialist judgement and is not made from a tithi. People born on Saptami are not Kaalratri natives. A lunar day of birth is a tithi in the natal panchang, which can be noted, and it is not this goddess. If the night moves you, keep it as worship in the 9th-house sense of dharma, or simply as family practice. The Vimshottari lord running that week is a coincidence of your Moon, not a decree of the seventh form. Let the donkey, the night, and Saptami be specific. Leave every other house where it was.

A donkey, in the usual images, with a dark and fierce form. That is not Kushmanda's lion or Shailputri's bull.
