Books for Learning Vedic Astrology

Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka teaches the grahas, the rashis, and how a result is phrased, in a tight classical style. Mantreshwara's Phaladeepika is the book readers open when they want a verse that says what a planet in a house tends to do. Parashara's Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is the long treatise for house lordship, yogas, and the dasha system, including Vimshottari's 120 years. Reading only one of them leaves a hole. The Jataka will not drill the antardasha formula. Parashara will not replace Varahamihira's economy.

Kalyana Varma's Saravali expands signs, planetary natures, and a large yoga list. Vaidyanatha's Jataka Parijata is a later synthesis people use as a bridge. Electional astrology, the muhurta of a wedding or a griha pravesh, is a separate shelf. Ramacharya's Muhurta Chintamani is the standard name on that shelf. A student who learns only natal yogas will still mis-time a ceremony, because tithi, nakshatra, and the lagna of the hour are not the 7th lord's dasha.

None of these texts know a birth city. The lagna comes from the time, the place, and the zone offset, including daylight saving where it applies. Jyothish SI casts that sidereal chart with the Lahiri ayanamsa and Swiss Ephemeris. Use the books to interpret the houses the software has already counted. A ranking of best books with scores would be a contest the tradition did not hold. The order above is a study order: principles, results, yogas and dasha, then muhurta.
