Signs, Houses, and Dashas in One Chart
A planet's sign, the house it falls in from the lagna, and the Vimshottari dasha are three different facts. Using one of them as if it were the other three is how a chart gets misread.
The sign is not yet a house
Suppose Mars is in Taurus. That is a sign placement: Mars in a Venus sign, neither its exaltation nor its debilitation. The house appears only after the lagna is known. With a Scorpio lagna, Taurus is the 7th house, so this Mars sits in the marriage house and is Mangal dosha by the 7th-house rule. With a Capricorn lagna, Taurus is the 5th, so the same Mars colors children and learning. The ephemeris did not change. The horizon did.
The dasha decides which fact is awake
Vimshottari runs 120 years, divided into nine mahadashas: Ketu 7, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, Mercury 17. The sequence starts from the lord of the Moon's nakshatra, and only the remaining fraction of that first mahadasha is left at birth. Mars in the 7th is a marriage fact. It becomes the chapter of life when Mars mahadasha or Mars antardasha is running, or when the 7th lord's period is running. In a Jupiter mahadasha of 16 years, a quiet Jupiter may outtalk that Mars.
Which fact answers which question
Marriage is the 7th house and its lord, then the Navamsa. Career is the 10th house and its lord. Timing is whichever mahadasha and antardasha are already running, not a future year invented to fit a hope. Gochar, the transit, is usually counted from the Moon and shows the weather inside that dasha. A transit of Saturn over a house does not replace the lord of the mahadasha. Read sign, then house, then the period. Stop there.
