Surya Mangala Yoga: Sun and Mars Together

The Sun rules authority, the father, and the vitality of the chart. Mars rules courage, land, siblings, and conflict. Their friendship means this yoga is not an enemy war inside one sign. It is heat added to heat. The Sun's mahadasha lasts 6 years, the shortest of the nine. Mars's mahadasha lasts 7 years. Either period, or the antardasha of one inside the other, is when Surya Mangala is timed. Outside those years the yoga is a capacity, not the chapter you are in.

In the 10th, the pair pushes career and public command. In the 3rd, it pushes initiative and siblings. In the 7th, Mars is in a manglik house and the marriage reading has to include that, with the sign and the Navamsa. In the 1st, the temperament is direct and the body of the chart carries Mars, again a manglik house. The same two planets do not mean the same life in all twelve places.

When Mars sits very close to the Sun it is treated as combust. The Sun's light swallows the planet that is too near. This page will not print an orb, because the classical distances vary by source. A wide conjunction in one sign is still Surya Mangala. A very tight one asks whether Mars can act on its own. The sign lord, the dispositor, remains part of the reading either way. Exalted Mars in Capricorn with the Sun is a stronger Mars than Mars in Cancer, its debilitation, with the Sun.
