Ashwin Shukla Pratipada opens the autumn nine nights. Shashthi through Dashami carry the public Durga Puja. The spring nine nights are a different month with the same goddess.

Autumn, not the only Navratri

Sharad Navratri runs through the bright fortnight of Ashwin on a Lahiri calendar, and Durga Puja concentrates on the final days of that same fortnight. Sharad means autumn. The nine nights begin on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada and run toward Navami. Vijayadashami, the tenth, is the day of victory that closes the sequence. Chaitra Navratri, in the bright fortnight of Chaitra, repeats the nine forms in spring and does not carry the same public Durga Puja of the east. If a page mixes the two and then offers a Sun-sign prediction for 'Navratri week,' it has lost both the month and the chart. The month is lunar. The chart, if you open one, is your lagna, not the festival's.

How the days are actually grouped

The first days belong to the household vrata and the early forms of Durga. In Bengal and in many eastern and diaspora pujas, the public installation gathers from Shashthi, the sixth, through Saptami, Ashtami, and Navami, with Dashami as the farewell and the immersion. Mahashtami and Mahanavami are the heavy ritual days. Vijayadashami is when the victory is marked and, in many regions, when tools and books are taken up again. None of these tithis assigns a result by zodiac sign. A person in a Mars Vimshottari period may feel the fortnight as their planet's season, because Durga worship often sits near Mars and the 6th house of conflict. A person in a quiet Mercury period may simply be at a family puja. Both are normal. The tithi did not change their dasha.

Reading a person during the fortnight

If the question is whether this Sharad will change a marriage, look at the 7th house and the D9 Navamsa and at whether the 7th lord's dasha is running, not at which form is worshipped on Saptami. If the question is career, look at the 10th. The holiday can interrupt work. It does not promote. If the question is a child, look at the 5th and Jupiter. Navami is not a conception tithi by rule. Kalratri on Saptami is one day inside this fortnight in the autumn, and Kali Puja on Kartik Amavasya is a later new moon. Keep those nights apart. No gemstone is required to enter a pandal. If Mars has been named by the chart, coral is a later conversation. The fortnight ends at Dashami. Your mahadasha does not.

Frequently asked questions

Are Durga Puja and Navratri the same event?

Sharad Navratri is the nine-night vow. Durga Puja is the concentrated public worship of the later tithis, especially from Shashthi to Dashami. They overlap in autumn and are not identical.

Does Vijayadashami start a new dasha?

It is a lunar tenth. The Vimshottari dasha changes when a period is exhausted, which is a birth calculation, not a festival.

Is Ashtami the most important day for every region?

Mahashtami is central in many Durga Pujas. Other regions weight Navami or the household vrata differently. The priest of that puja is the guide.
