A Child's Name Syllable Comes from the Moon's Pada
The traditional starting syllable of a child's name comes from the pada of the Moon's nakshatra, not from the Moon sign alone and not from a numerology sum. Each nakshatra has four padas, and each pada has a syllable. Ashwini, the first nakshatra, uses Chu, Che, Cho, and La for its four quarters. The rest of the 108 syllables have to be taken from the actual pada on a Lahiri chart. A rashi-only initial misses three other padas inside the same sign.

Why the rashi is too coarse
A sign holds roughly two and a quarter nakshatras, and several stars cross the boundary. Mesha contains Ashwini, Bharani, and part of Krittika. Three different Vimshottari lords, Ketu, Venus, and the Sun, and many syllables, share one rashi. Naming from Mesha as if it had one initial assigns the same sound to a Ketu Moon and a Venus Moon. The pada is 3 degrees and 20 minutes wide. A birth time that is wrong by an hour can cross a pada near the edge and hand the child the neighboring syllable. The city matters because the zone offset is applied before the Julian day. In India the offset is Asia/Kolkata all year, and the minute still decides the pada.
What else deserves attention
The syllable is a custom of sound, not a destiny. The child's lagna lord, Moon, and 5th house describe intellect and health themes more than the initial does, and health remains a medical matter, not a naming matter. Families also look at the weekday lord and at an ancestor's name. Those are social choices. If two relatives insist on different rashis because one used the hospital date in a different time zone convention, calculate the Moon once, with the true offset, and read one pada. Jyothish SI will place that Moon with Swiss Ephemeris. Do not publish a full syllable chart from memory if the pada is uncertain. Ashwini's four are the illustration. The child's own quarter is the assignment.
After the name is chosen
The name does not change the Vimshottari balance. A Moon in the first pada of Ashwini still opens under Ketu, up to seven years of balance depending on the fraction remaining. The syllable Chu does not create that dasha, and a different syllable would not cancel it. Keep the tradition if you like the sound. Keep the chart for the 5th lord and the dasha. A free kundli shows the nakshatra. The pada needs a time tight enough to trust a 3-degree-20-minute window. If the family only knows the hour, say so, and choose a name the whole household can live with rather than a false precision.
Frequently asked questions
What decides the traditional initial?
The Moon's nakshatra pada. Ashwini's four padas use Chu, Che, Cho, and La. Other stars have their own syllables, read from the calculated pada, not from the rashi alone.
Can two babies in one rashi share one initial?
Only if they share a pada. A sign contains several nakshatras and several padas, with different sounds and different dasha lords.
Does the name change the mahadasha?
No. The opening lord is the birth nakshatra's lord. The syllable is a naming custom beside that clock.
