Why Navratri and Durga Puja Come Twice a Year
The two Navratris belong to two lunar months, Chaitra in spring and Ashwin in autumn. Bengal's Durga Puja is the autumn one.

Two bright fortnights
Navratri is kept twice because the nine nights are tied to two different lunar months, not because one festival was copied onto a second date by accident. Vasanta Navratri begins on Chaitra Shukla Pratipada. Sharad Navratri begins on Ashwin Shukla Pratipada. Each runs through Navami, nine tithis of the bright half. Chaitra Pratipada is also the lunar new year in several regional calendars. Ashwin's bright fortnight is the one that grows into public Durga Puja, especially in Bengal, where the main days gather around Shashthi, Saptami, Ashtami, Navami, and Vijaya Dashami. A civil date from a past year does not define either start. The panchang of that year does.
Nine forms, one Devi
Across those nine tithis the Navadurga are worshipped in order: Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kaalratri, Mahagauri, and Siddhidatri. The order follows the tithi, from Pratipada to Navami. It does not follow a color chart printed for one season. Color lists change by region and by year, so they are not the classical spine of the festival. The text behind the recitation is the Durga Saptashati, the Devi Mahatmya, whose three charitas tell the battles with Madhu and Kaitabha, with Mahishasura, and with Shumbha and Nishumbha. Homes that cannot recite all 700 verses still keep the nine days. The tithi count remains the same.
What this is not in a kundli
Keeping Navratri is a dharma practice linked with the Devi. In a birth chart the 9th house is dharma, teachers, and worship, and the 12th is moksha and what is offered up. Those houses do not start on Ashwin Pratipada for every native, and they do not move because a city has a pandal. Someone born under a strong 9th lord may feel the festival as part of life. Someone else may keep it as family custom with a quiet 9th. Neither fact is a prediction of luck for a rashi during those nine days. The festival dates are lunar. Personal timing, if it is asked, is still the Vimshottari dasha already running.
Frequently asked questions
Is Chaitra Navratri the same festival as Durga Puja?
Both are Navratri, nine nights of the Devi. Public Durga Puja, as Bengal keeps it, belongs to Sharad Navratri in Ashwin. Chaitra is the spring observance and begins the lunar year in many calendars.
Do the nine goddesses change order?
The classical order runs from Shailputri on Pratipada to Siddhidatri on Navami. Regional stories add local rites. The tithi sequence is the stable part.
Can a past year's date be reused?
No. Pratipada falls on a different civil date each year. The rule is the lunar tithi, read from a panchang, not a remembered weekday.
