Navratri Day 1: Shailputri, Tithi, and Colour

The first of the nine forms is the daughter of the mountain, kept on the first bright tithi. A colour for the day is a seasonal custom, not the calendar.

Pratipada, not a fixed civil date

Shailputri is the first form of Navratri, worshipped on Shukla Pratipada, and that tithi is the date the puja actually has. Pratipada opens both Chaitra Navratri and Ashwin Navratri, so the goddess of day one arrives twice in the lunar year, in spring and in autumn. The civil date moves. A page that freezes her to one October weekday of a past year is remembering a calendar, not a tithi. The panchang of the current year names when Pratipada starts and ends, and the end matters, because a tithi can expire in the morning. Colour is a separate custom. Lists that assign a shade to day one change by region and by season. They are not Shailputri's identity, and this reading will not invent one.

Who the first form is

Shailputri is the daughter of the mountain, Himavan, the form of the Devi associated with the beginning of the nine nights. She is shown riding a bull and carrying a trident and a lotus. That iconography belongs to her and not to Brahmacharini, who comes on Dwitiya on foot with a rosary and a water pot, and not to Kushmanda, who comes on Chaturthi with the cosmic egg. The bull and the mountain are the details that would be false if pasted onto Kaalratri's night, the seventh, whose vehicle in the usual images is a donkey. Families begin the ghatasthapana, the installing of the pot, on this first tithi when they keep the full nine nights. The rite marks a start. It is not a prediction for any rashi.

Recitation and the chart's 9th house

The text of the nine nights is the Durga Saptashati. Day one does not require a different scripture. People who recite begin the first charita in this stretch, the battle with Madhu and Kaitabha, and others simply light a lamp and keep a fast according to the household. In a birth chart, worship of this kind is a 9th-house matter, dharma and the teacher, not a transit that changes the 10th house for a week. No lagna receives a lucky colour from Pratipada. If the question is when to start the fast, the answer is the Pratipada named in this year's panchang, for the Navratri being kept, Chaitra or Ashwin. The goddess does not move because a headline preferred a date.

Frequently asked questions

What tithi is Shailputri's day?

Shukla Pratipada, the first lunar day of the bright fortnight, in Chaitra for the spring Navratri and in Ashwin for the autumn one.

Is there one correct colour?

No single colour is the classical rule. Published colour sequences vary. The stable markers are the tithi and the form: the mountain's daughter on a bull.

Does this day change a horoscope?

It is a festival tithi. Personal timing remains the Vimshottari dasha. The 9th house can show a native's pull toward worship. It does not turn Pratipada into a forecast.
