Gandmool: Nakshatra Dosha at the Three Junctions
Nakshatra dosha in ordinary speech usually means Gandmool, a birth Moon at the gandanta junctions: the end of Ashlesha or the start of Magha, the end of Jyeshtha or the start of Mula, and the end of Revati or the start of Ashwini. Those are the water-to-fire knots of the sidereal zodiac. The label is a jataka caution about a knot, not a statement that the rest of the chart has stopped mattering.

Where the knots are
Ashlesha closes Karka and Magha opens Simha. Jyeshtha closes Vrishchika and Mula opens Dhanu. Revati closes Meena and Ashwini opens Mesha. The last pada of the water nakshatra and the first pada of the fire nakshatra are the portions most often singled out, because a pada is 3 degrees and 20 minutes and the junction itself is a point. A Moon deep inside Mula's later padas is still a Ketu nakshatra, and some family customs still call every Mula birth a dosha. That wider custom should be named as a custom. The astronomical knot is the boundary. Jyothish SI can show whether the Moon is in the first pada or the fourth only when the birth time is tight enough. A date without a time cannot.
What the caution is allowed to say
Gandanta is read as a life that starts on a seam: the mind is sensitive to endings and beginnings. It is not a prediction of a specific illness, and this page will not invent one. The Moon's dispositor still works. A Mula Moon is disposited by Jupiter, ruler of Dhanu. A Magha Moon is disposited by the Sun, ruler of Simha. An Ashwini Moon is disposited by Mars. Those dispositors can be exalted, debilitated, or aspected, and they outweigh a one-word dosha. The lagna lord and the running dasha outweigh it further. Ketu's seven-year mahadasha will emphasize a Mula or Ashwini or Magha Moon because Ketu rules all three stars. That is dasha arithmetic, not a curse.
Matching use versus natal use
Some marriage customs flag Mula, Ashlesha, or Jyeshtha padas on their own score sheet, separate from Ashtakoota's 36 points. Ask which rule is being applied. Nadi, gana, and yoni already score those stars inside the 36. A second dosha with the same Moon double-counts one placement. Remedies in families include a shanti after birth. The shanti does not move the Moon off the junction. The practical chart work is the dispositor, the lagna, and the dasha of Ketu or of the Moon's sign lord. A free kundli will show the nakshatra. The pada needs the minute.
Frequently asked questions
Which nakshatras are the gandanta pair?
Ashlesha with Magha, Jyeshtha with Mula, and Revati with Ashwini. The knot is the water-sign ending and the fire-sign beginning, especially the padas that touch.
Does Gandmool replace the lagna lord?
No. It flags a Moon on a junction. The lagna lord, the Moon's dispositor, and the running dasha still describe the life.
Why are Magha, Mula, and Ashwini linked in dasha?
All three are Ketu's nakshatras in the Vimshottari order. Ketu mahadasha lasts seven years whenever it arrives, whether or not the birth was in the first pada.
