Nakshatra Types Used for Muhurta

Muhurta tradition sorts the twenty-seven nakshatras into types of action: dhruva, tikshna, ugra, kshipra, mridu, mishra, and chara. Dhruva, the fixed group, is Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, and Uttara Bhadrapada. Tikshna, the sharp group, is Ardra, Ashlesha, Jyeshtha, and Mula. These types tell you what kind of act the star supports. They are not the same as the nine Vimshottari lords who time a life.

The seven working groups

Ugra, fierce, is Bharani, Magha, Purva Phalguni, Purva Ashadha, and Purva Bhadrapada. Kshipra, swift, is Ashwini, Pushya, and Hasta. Mridu, soft, is Mrigashira, Chitra, Anuradha, and Revati. Mishra, mixed, is Krittika and Vishakha. Chara, movable, is Punarvasu, Swati, Shravana, Dhanishta, and Shatabhisha. Count them: 4, 4, 5, 3, 4, 2, and 5. That is twenty-seven. Abhijit is a separate intercalary star some muhurta books use near the end of Uttara Ashadha and the start of Shravana. It is not an extra Vimshottari nakshatra in the 120-year scheme, which stays with the twenty-seven from Ashwini through Revati.

Matching the act to the type

Foundations, planting, and permanent settlements prefer dhruva. Cutting, surgery in the old muhurta sense, and acts that must sever prefer tikshna or ugra, and a family priest should be the one to apply that advice. Swift errands prefer kshipra. Art, music, and gentle agreements prefer mridu. Travel and change prefer chara. Mishra is used when the act itself is mixed. The weekday and the tithi still have to agree, and the tithi is the one in force at local sunrise. A dhruva nakshatra listed for Delhi is not automatically dhruva at sunrise in another city if the Moon is about to change star. The type is a property of the star. The star in force is local.

Type versus dasha lord

Pushya is kshipra for muhurta and Saturn for Vimshottari. Rohini is dhruva for muhurta and the Moon for dasha. Using the muhurta type to predict a mahadasha confuses a calendar tool with a birth clock. The birth clock needs the Moon's nakshatra lord: Ketu, Venus, Sun, Moon, Mars, Rahu, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, repeating. Jyothish SI casts that natal star with Lahiri ayanamsa. A muhurta type is consulted afterward, on the day you intend to act, from that city's panchang. One nakshatra can be both a dasha seed in a birth chart and a muhurta type on a Tuesday fifty years later. The roles do not merge.

Frequently asked questions

Which nakshatras are dhruva?

Rohini, Uttara Phalguni, Uttara Ashadha, and Uttara Bhadrapada. Muhurta uses them for acts meant to last, such as foundations and settling.

Is the muhurta type the dasha lord?

No. Pushya is swift for muhurta and Saturn-ruled for Vimshottari. The type chooses an act. The lord times a life from the birth Moon.

How many nakshatras are in the standard count?

Twenty-seven, from Ashwini to Revati. The seven muhurta groups add up to that total. Abhijit is an extra muhurta star, not an extra dasha lord.
