Nadi Dosha Exceptions in the Matching Rules

The classical easing of Nadi dosha is not a new ritual. It is a pair of exceptions already inside the matching rules. One is a shared Moon sign with two different nakshatras. The other is one nakshatra that straddles two signs, so the Moons share a star and not a rashi. Some panchangs also soften the case when only the pada differs. The koota can remain a reduced score rather than a full eight, and the 7th houses are still read.

Same sign, different stars

Vrishabha can hold Krittika's later padas and the whole of Rohini, and both of those nakshatras are Antya. Two Moons in Vrishabha, one in Krittika and one in Rohini, share Antya nadi and share a sign. The same-sign exception is the one matchers cite here. Mithuna offers another shape: Mrigashira's later part and Ardra are different nadis, so that pair may not be Nadi dosha at all. The exception only matters after you have confirmed the nadis really match. It is a pardon inside a real zero, not a reason to skip the lookup. Bhakoot, the sign koota worth 7 points, will often look friendly in this same-sign case, which is why the total can survive a Nadi problem.

Same star, two signs

Nine nakshatras cross a sign boundary: Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, and Purva Bhadrapada. A Krittika Moon in Mesha and a Krittika Moon in Vrishabha share a nakshatra and not a rashi. That is the second classical exception. Mula does not qualify for it, because Mula sits entirely inside Dhanu. Rohini sits entirely inside Vrishabha. Applying the exception to a star that never crosses a boundary is a misreading. Pada-level softening, where the quarters differ inside one star and one sign, is a further local custom and needs the exact quarter, which means the birth time has to be good enough to fix the Moon inside 3 degrees and 20 minutes.

What remains after the exception

An exception that the texts accept still leaves you with two people, two lagnas, and two 7th lords. Venus mahadasha of twenty years and the 7th lord's antardasha time the marriage whether or not Nadi was pardoned. D9 can contradict a friendly guna sheet. Mangal dosha can sit on top of a pardoned nadi. Jyothish SI will compute the nakshatra and the pada from the city and the minute using Lahiri ayanamsa. If the time is rounded to the hour, do not claim the pada exception. Claim only what the time can support, and let the 7th house carry the decision the guna table cannot finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the same-sign exception?

Both Moons in one rashi, in different nakshatras, even if those nakshatras share a nadi. The case is treated as eased, and the other kootas still apply.

Which nakshatras can sit in two signs?

Krittika, Mrigashira, Punarvasu, Uttara Phalguni, Chitra, Vishakha, Uttara Ashadha, Dhanishta, and Purva Bhadrapada. A shared one of these, in two rashis, is the second exception.

Does an exception restore all eight points?

Traditions differ on the restored number. Many treat the dosha as eased rather than as a full score of 8. The 7th houses and D9 are still required.
