Vishnu, Mercury, and a Wednesday Practice

Mercury rules speech, accounts, study, trade, and the nerves of daily judgment. His signs are Mithuna and Kanya. He is exalted in Kanya, the same sign he owns, and debilitated in Meena. Wednesday is his vara. When families recite Vishnu's names on a Wednesday they are, in this mapping, sitting with Budha's day. The mantra does not change a debilitated Mercury into an exalted one. It is a discipline beside the seventeen-year dasha. Children, students, and traders are the people who most often have a real Mercury question, because the 5th house of intellect and the 10th of profession both use Budha as a karaka of skill.

A simple Vishnu practice is enough to describe without inventing a regional vidhi: a Wednesday, a clean seat, attention on Vishnu's name, and a charitable act connected with learning or with feeding. Different sampradayas add shankha, tulsi, or a specific stotra. Those details belong to the family priest. They are not calculated from Swiss Ephemeris. What the ephemeris does calculate is Mercury's sidereal longitude with Lahiri ayanamsa. If Mercury is combust, close to the Sun, his speech and trade significations are under the Sun's glare. If he is retrograde, the same matters turn inward and often rewrite themselves later. Neither condition is cured by skipping the chart and adding more verses.

Mercury mahadasha lasts seventeen years, long enough to cover an education and a first profession. Antardashas inside it run through the nine lords in order from Mercury. Study, examinations, and contracts are examined in Mercury's period when Mercury owns or occupies the 5th or the 10th, or when the 5th lord is Mercury. For Kanya lagna, Mercury is the lagna lord, so the whole period is personal. For Mesha lagna, Mercury owns the 3rd and the 6th, an upachaya pair, and the same mantra sits on courage, skill, and conflict rather than on the self.
