Debilitated Planets in a Sidereal Chart

Debilitation is one sign per planet, counted in the sidereal zodiac. It slows that planet's significations. It does not cancel the houses the planet rules.

The seven signs of fall

Debilitation is a sidereal sign placement on the Lahiri chart: the Sun falls in Libra, the Moon in Scorpio, and Mars in Cancer. Mercury falls in Pisces, Jupiter in Capricorn, Venus in Virgo, and Saturn in Aries. Those seven signs are the opposite of the exaltation signs: Sun in Aries, Moon in Taurus, Mars in Capricorn, Mercury in Virgo, Jupiter in Cancer, Venus in Pisces, Saturn in Libra. A planet in its fall struggles to deliver its own significations cleanly. The Sun's authority comes with more compromise. Venus's comfort and marriage-karaka role comes with more awkwardness. The houses that planet rules from the lagna still belong to it.

The sign lord is part of the sentence

A debilitated planet answers, in part, to the lord of the sign it occupies. The Sun in Libra must reckon with Venus. Jupiter in Capricorn must reckon with Saturn. If that sign lord is strong, angular, and friendly to the fallen planet, the fall is cushioned. If the sign lord is also weak, the fallen planet has nowhere to lean. This is why two people with Venus in Virgo live different marriages. One has Venus's dispositor Mercury in a kendra, ruling useful houses. The other has Mercury in the 8th, and the awkwardness of Venus in Virgo has no rescue. The 7th house and the D9 Navamsa still judge the marriage. Debility of Venus is a factor inside that judgment, not a substitute for it.

Cancellation and the dasha

Neecha bhanga, cancellation of debility, is a separate rule set. The usual tests look at whether the lord of the debilitation sign sits in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon, and at related angular conditions. Cancellation is earned by those placements. It is not assumed because the person later becomes successful. Even a cancelled debility leaves a biography in which the planet's gifts arrived through effort or through another person's support. Results ripen in the Vimshottari dasha already running. A fallen Jupiter is loudest in Jupiter's mahadasha or bhukti. Outside that period, the same placement can sit quietly while other planets run the life. Career questions still go to the 10th house and its lord, even when the fallen planet happens to rule it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Rahu debilitated in a fixed sign?

The seven classical falls above are the ones with wide agreement. Rahu and Ketu debility is taught differently in different lineages, so this page does not assign them a sign.

Does debility in the Navamsa count the same way?

A planet can be fine in the birth chart and fallen in the D9, or the reverse. Marriage readings weight the Navamsa fall heavily.

Should a debilitated planet get its gemstone?

Only after the chart names that planet as one to support. Fall alone is not the naming. Strengthening a fallen 8th lord can stir the 8th.
