Shani Is the Son of Surya; the Guru of the Devas Is Jupiter

In the Puranas Shani is the son of Surya and Chhaya, the shadow-form of the Sun's wife, and his gaze is said to humble even his father. That is the story worth keeping, because it matches the chart fact that the Sun and Saturn are enemies. The guru of the devas is Brihaspati, who is Jupiter, a different graha. Saturn is not Jupiter's student in the sense that a kundli can prove. When people ask for Shani and his guru, the honest pair to open is Saturn and Jupiter: counsel and delay, expansion and limit. If they conjunct, the chart has the meeting. If they do not, the myth does not insert Jupiter into Saturn's sign.

Remedial culture pairs Shani with Shiva and with Hanuman, and Saturday is Saturn's vara. Those are devotional assignments. They do not change exaltation in Libra or debilitation in Aries. A story in which a guru tames Saturn is a story about patience, which is already Saturn's nature. It is not a cancellation. Neecha bhanga cancels the Aries fall only under chart rules, Mars or Venus in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon. A retelling does not. Use the myth to remember that Saturn's results are slow and hard to flatter. Then return to the house Saturn rules. For Taurus and Libra those houses are desirable. The son of the Sun is the yogakaraka there, story or no story.

Jupiter is the karaka of the 9th, the guru, and children. Saturn aspecting Jupiter delays teachers, children, or faith, according to the houses. Jupiter aspecting Saturn can soften a hard Saturn with counsel. That exchange of glances is the real guru-and-Shani yoga, and only when the aspect exists. Mutual friendship is not theirs in the simple scheme: Jupiter is neutral to Saturn, Saturn is neutral to Jupiter, while Saturn's enemies are the Sun, the Moon, and Mars. Neutrality is already a useful correction to a story of pure enmity between guru and Shani. Read the aspect if it is there. If it is not, do not narrate a classroom the sky did not hold at birth.
