How Marriage Compatibility Works
Varna through Nadi is the premarital arithmetic. The marriage itself is still the 7th lord. A high total cannot repair a broken D9.

Eight kootas, thirty-six points
Marriage compatibility works, in the classical match, by comparing the two Moon nakshatras in eight kootas. Varna is 1 point, Vashya 2, Tara 3, Yoni 4, Graha Maitri 5, Gana 6, Bhakoot 7, and Nadi 8. The total is 36. Nadi, the heaviest, sorts nakshatras into Adi, Madhya, and Antya, and the same nadi is the fault people treat most seriously. Bhakoot compares the Moon signs for the 6/8 and 2/12 relationships, not for a vague clash of personalities. Gana sorts Deva, Manushya, and Rakshasa. None of these steps uses the Sun. Two people who do not know their nakshatras cannot run the method. A website that asks only for two birthdays is guessing the Moons or ignoring them. The arithmetic is specific. It is also not the whole marriage.
The charts after the points
Each person still has a 7th house, a 7th lord, and a Navamsa. Venus is checked as wife karaka in the man's chart, Jupiter as husband karaka in the woman's. A score of 28 beside a 7th lord in the 8th and fallen in D9 is not a success the points can guarantee. A score of 18, the customary minimum many families use, beside two strong 7th lords can be a better marriage than the total suggests. Mangal dosha is a separate Mars check, in the 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th from the lagna, Moon, or Venus, with cancellations. It is not one of the eight kootas. People add it because Mars on the 7th is about heat in the bond, which the Moon's yoni koota does not fully cover. The method is a sequence: nakshatras, then both lagnas, then D9, then the doshas you actually find. Skipping to a single word, matched or doomed, is how the sequence gets a bad name.
What the method refuses to promise
It does not promise happiness, children, or a number of years. Children are the 5th and Jupiter and the saptamsa. Longevity of the bond leans on the 7th lord and the 8th, not on Tara koota. It does not know the families' conduct. A clean nadi does not stop a 6th-lord dasha from being quarrelsome. Timing of the wedding is Vimshottari, usually the 7th lord, which may be years away when the match is scored. The score is a gate, not a calendar. If one birth time is missing, score the Moons only if the nakshatras are known from a reliable chart, and say clearly that the lagnas were not compared. Compatibility works as this stack of checks. It does not work as two signs declared lovers. When a step fails, name the step. Nadi is not Bhakoot, and neither is a weak Venus.
Frequently asked questions
What is the total of the kootas?
Thirty-six. Nadi is 8, Bhakoot 7, Gana 6, Graha Maitri 5, Yoni 4, Tara 3, Vashya 2, and Varna 1.
Is 18 points enough?
Eighteen is a customary minimum in many families. Same nadi can still stop a match above that line, and a damaged 7th lord can still outweigh a pretty total.
Where does Mangal dosha fit?
Outside the eight kootas. It is a Mars placement from the lagna, Moon, or Venus. It is checked because heat in marriage is not fully described by the Moon's points.
