Kajari Teej Falls on Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya

The festival is a lunar date. It is not Hariyali Teej and not Hartalika. The clock window depends on when Krishna Tritiya is current where you stand.

A dark-fortnight third, not a solar day

Kajari Teej, also called Kajli or Budhi Teej in some regions, is observed on Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya, the third tithi of the dark fortnight of the lunar month Bhadrapada. It is distinct from Hariyali Teej, which falls on Shravana Shukla Tritiya, and from Hartalika Teej, which falls on Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya. Three Teej festivals, three different tithis. A civil date copied from last year will miss, because a tithi is the Moon's elongation from the Sun, not a Gregorian anniversary. This page will not print this year's date. The rule is the tithi. Apply it to the year you are in, at the place you are in.

Muhurta follows the tithi and the sunrise

The vow sits inside the hours when Krishna Tritiya is current. Those hours can start after sunrise or end before the next sunrise, so the festival can be split across two civil dates. Local custom then decides which date holds the gathering, often preferring the date when the tithi covers the needed part of the day. A muhurta copied from another city ignores sunrise. Rahu kalam, if you are avoiding it, is an eighth of that city's daytime. Panchang limbs for the hour are tithi, vara, nakshatra, the panchang yoga, and karana. The wedding-style lagna is less central for this vow than the tithi itself, but a severely afflicted Moon is a poor comfort for a lunar observance.

The chart does not require the festival

Kajari Teej is a regional observance, strong in parts of North India, tied to monsoon and to the wellbeing of family in folk practice. It is not a house in your kundli. Your 4th house is home whether or not you keep the vow. Your Moon is manas whether or not the tithi is Tritiya. If you keep it, keep the correct fortnight. Showing up on Shukla Tritiya means you have kept Hartalika or, in Shravana, Hariyali, which may be what you intended, and it is not Kajari. The astrology is the identification. The devotion is the household's. No lagna becomes luckier because the third tithi of the dark half was busy.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kajari Teej the same as Hartalika Teej?

No. Hartalika is Bhadrapada Shukla Tritiya, the bright fortnight. Kajari is Bhadrapada Krishna Tritiya, the dark fortnight.

Why does the date change every year?

Tritiya is a lunar tithi. It returns against the civil calendar at a different date each year, and the hours depend on the place.

Does keeping it change the 7th house?

No. Marriage remains the 7th lord and Navamsa. A Teej vow is a custom on a tithi, not a yoga.
