Jyotish Was a Calendar Vedanga Before It Was a Birth Chart
Calling Jyotish the highest science mixes a testable ephemeris with a tradition of interpretation. The two deserve different verbs.

A limb of the Veda for timing
Jyotish as a Vedanga was a calendar science for fixing yajna times, and natal horoscopy is a later use of the same sky. The early problem was tithi and nakshatra for ritual, which is still the panchang. The later problem was a lagna for a person, houses, and dashas. Both share the Moon and the Sun. They do not share a method of proof. You can test whether the Moon is in Rohini at a stated hour. You cannot test a sentence that says Rohini guarantees a particular marriage, because the marriage also needs the 7th lord. The sky is calculable. The phala is a rule applied by a reader.
What can be exact
A sidereal position needs an ayanamsa. Jyothish SI uses Lahiri and Swiss Ephemeris, geocodes the birth city, and applies the zone offset in minutes before the Julian day. Daylight saving changes that offset and can change the lagna. Those steps are engineering. If the recorded time is wrong, the engineering faithfully produces the wrong lagna. Precision is not the same as a true birth clock. Calling the whole subject the highest science skips the difference between an ephemeris and a judgment such as Kemadruma or Shasha yoga. Those yogas are definitions in texts. They are meaningful inside the tradition. They are not measurements of a substance.
A high craft is still a craft
The useful claim is narrower and stronger. Jyotish is a disciplined way to calculate a sidereal chart and to read it with named rules: exaltation, lordship, aspect, Vimshottari from the nakshatra. Used that way, it is a serious interpretive craft tied to a real sky. Used as a promise that every event is already certified, it asks the 9th house to do what only a record of events can do. Utkrsht, excellent, fits the care of the calculation. It does not fit a reading that invents a degree or a celebrity's dasha. Keep the ephemeris high. Keep the sentence about a person's fate answerable to the houses you can actually show.
Frequently asked questions
Is Jyotish the same as astronomy?
It uses astronomy for positions. Interpretation of houses and yogas is a textual tradition on top of those positions. The two steps should not be collapsed.
Why does the ayanamsa matter?
Ayanamsa sets the sidereal zodiac. Lahiri is the ayanamsa used here. A different ayanamsa can move a planet near a sign boundary into another rashi.
Can a perfect calculation save a wrong birth time?
No. The lagna follows the time and the zone offset you supply. A wrong clock produces a precise chart of a birth that did not happen then.
