How the Moon's Nakshatra Starts a Kundli Reading
A kundli is not twelve boxes of adjectives. It is a lagna, a Moon nakshatra, and the dasha that balance opens.

The opening balance is the whole trick
Vimshottari begins from the lord of the nakshatra the Moon occupies at birth, and the first mahadasha is only the balance left in that nakshatra. If the Moon has just entered Ashwini, nearly the full 7 years of Ketu remain. If the Moon is near the end of the same nakshatra, only a short Ketu balance remains before Venus starts its 20 years. That is why two charts with Moon in Aries can be living completely different dashas. You cannot see this from a Sun sign, and you should not round it to a full period.
Houses are counted from the lagna
Once the timing is honest, count houses from the rising sign. The 1st is the body, the 4th is home, the 7th is marriage, the 10th is work. Whole-sign Jyotish takes the entire sign as the house. The lord of that sign carries the topic to whatever house the lord occupies. A 10th lord in the 9th ties work to dharma, travel, or a teacher. A 10th lord in the 6th ties work to service, debt, or competition. Predictions that skip the lord and describe only the planets sitting in the house miss the planet that actually owns the matter.
Navamsa checks marriage and the graha's root
The D9 Navamsa does not replace the birth chart. It shows the deeper condition of each graha and, with the 7th house and 7th lord, the marriage. A planet exalted in the birth chart and fallen in Navamsa is not uniformly strong. Read the birth chart first, then use D9 as the check. Paid Jyothish SI plans add the extra divisional charts and PDF reports. The free chart already gives the lagna and the chat. Either way, refuse any reading that quotes a degree or a dasha year it never calculated from the birth time.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Moon sign the same as the lagna?
Only if the Moon happens to occupy the rising sign. Usually they differ. Houses are counted from the lagna. Vimshottari starts from the Moon's nakshatra.
What is the first mahadasha at birth?
It belongs to the lord of the Moon's nakshatra, and it lasts only for the portion of that nakshatra still ahead of the Moon at birth.
Does Navamsa change the birth lagna?
No. Navamsa is a division of each sign. The birth lagna stays the sign that was rising. D9 is a second chart used as a check, especially for marriage.
