Reading Mars Mahadasha from the Houses Mars Rules
The seven years of Mangal are specific. They describe siblings, land, conflict, and whatever houses Mars owns for that lagna.

Seven years, placed after the Moon
Mars mahadasha runs for 7 years in Vimshottari, after the Moon's 10 years and before Rahu's 18. You only enter it when the sequence that began at your Moon's nakshatra reaches Mangal, or when you were born with the balance of Mars still running. A calendar year inside those seven is an antardasha, a sub-period of another lord. Reading the mahadasha as one uniform mood misses that. The antardasha of Saturn inside Mars feels different from the antardasha of Jupiter, because the second lord brings its own houses.
Lordship changes the seven years
Mars rules Aries and Scorpio. For a Cancer lagna it also rules the 5th and the 10th, so it is a yogakaraka and the mahadasha can carry both children and career. For a Leo lagna Mars rules the 4th and the 9th, again a yogakaraka pair. For a Gemini lagna Mars rules the 6th and the 11th, so the same seven years lean toward competition, debt, and gains. None of this depends on Mars being a natural malefic. Natural malefic is the temperament. The houses it rules are the syllabus of the dasha.
Sign, aspect, and the 3rd house
Mars is the karaka of siblings, courage, and land. Its special aspects are the 4th, 7th, and 8th from its seat, so during its mahadasha those houses are also lit. Exalted Mars in Capricorn has the strength to do this cleanly. Debilitated Mars in Cancer does it clumsily unless neecha bhanga applies through the Moon, lord of Cancer. Kuja dosha, Mars in the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th from lagna, Moon, or Venus, is a marriage factor. It is not the definition of the mahadasha. If Mars is not in those houses, the seven years are still Mars. They are just not Manglik years.
Frequently asked questions
Does everyone face Mars mahadasha at the same age?
No. The sequence starts from the Moon's nakshatra, and the first dasha is only a balance. Two people of the same age are often in different mahadashas.
Is Mars mahadasha always a fight?
Mars brings heat, courage, and conflict into the houses it rules. If those houses are the 5th and 10th, the period can be constructive and still be sharp.
How long is the Mars mahadasha?
Seven years. Inside it, each antardasha belongs to one of the nine lords and should be read separately.
