How to Judge Whether Saturn Is Strong or Weak
Shani is strong or weak by sign, direction, and the houses it rules. A hard decade does not, by itself, prove a weak Saturn.

Exaltation, own sign, and fall
Saturn is exalted in Libra, debilitated in Aries, and in its own signs in Capricorn and Aquarius. Those four placements are the first test, and they are not equal. Libra is the exaltation. Capricorn and Aquarius let Saturn act as the sign lord of the house it occupies. Aries is the fall, and a fallen Saturn still has to be read for neecha bhanga before anyone calls the graha ruined. Cancellation is considered when Mars, lord of Aries, sits in a kendra from the lagna or the Moon, or when Venus, lord of Libra, does the same. Without one of those supports, Saturn struggles to deliver the houses it rules.
Direction and friendship
Digbala for Saturn is the 7th house, not the lagna. A Saturn in Libra in the 7th has sign and direction together. Friendship fills in the other signs. Saturn's friends are Mercury and Venus, so Gemini, Virgo, Taurus, and Libra are friendly ground. Its enemies are the Sun, the Moon, and Mars, so Leo, Cancer, Aries, and Scorpio are enemy signs, with Aries already the debilitation. Jupiter is neutral, which makes Sagittarius and Pisces mixed rather than hostile. Retrograde motion does not cancel a bad sign. It intensifies whatever the sign already is.
Do not score Saturn from a life story
Shadbala is a real six-part strength system. It needs the calculated chart, not a tally of disappointments. Repeated delay can be a strong Saturn doing slow work, especially if Saturn rules the 9th and 10th for a Taurus lagna or the 4th and 5th for a Libra lagna. Those are yogakaraka lordships. The same graha ruling the 6th, 8th, or 12th for another lagna can be technically strong in Libra and still deliver difficult houses. Judge the sign, the 7th-house direction, and the houses Saturn owns. Then look at whether Saturn's mahadasha, 19 years in Vimshottari, is the period you are actually living.
Frequently asked questions
Is Saturn weak just because it is retrograde?
No. Retrograde Saturn repeats its sign condition more strongly. A retrograde Saturn in Libra is not weak, and a retrograde Saturn in Aries is not rescued by the retrograde motion.
Does a difficult Saturn mahadasha prove a weak Saturn?
The mahadasha lasts 19 years and gives the houses Saturn rules and occupies. Difficulty can come from those houses. It is not a strength score.
Where does Saturn have directional strength?
Saturn's digbala is the 7th house. The lagna is not Saturn's strongest direction, even when Saturn sits there in its own sign.
