Shani Dosha: Natal Saturn and Sade Sati Are Different
There is no single sutra named Shani dosha. People use the words for two different Saturns. One is natal: Saturn occupying a house they fear, often the 1st, 4th, 7th, 8th, or 12th. The other is Sade Sati, Saturn's transit over the Moon sign and the signs on either side. A birth chart does not 'have' a transit. A transit does not rewrite the birth Saturn.

The natal placement
Saturn in the 1st weighs on the body and the pace of life. In the 4th it weighs on home and the mother bond. In the 7th it delays and cools marriage. In the 8th it lengthens the theme of rupture and other people's resources. In the 12th it spends, isolates, or sends the person far. These are house meanings, stronger when Saturn is debilitated in Mesha and softer when Saturn is exalted in Tula or in its own Makara or Kumbha. For Vrishabha and Tula, Saturn is yogakaraka, so a Saturn in a so-called bad house may still rule the best houses. Calling that Shani dosha ignores lordship. Check the signs Saturn rules before you accept the label.
Sade Sati is a transit from the Moon
When Saturn transits the 12th from the Moon, then the Moon's own sign, then the 2nd, people call the span Sade Sati. Saturn takes roughly two and a half years in a sign, so the three signs are the famous seven and a half. The exact dates come from the ephemeris, not from the Moon sign's name. A Makara Moon is not 'in Sade Sati' merely for being Makara. Saturn has to be in Dhanu, Makara, or Kumbha in the sky. This page will not say where Saturn is today. Look it up. The transit is felt more when natal Saturn is also weak, and it is still not a disease and not a curse. The running mahadasha can outweigh it. Saturn's own 19-year mahadasha during Sade Sati is a double Saturn. A Jupiter mahadasha during the same transit is a different climate with Saturn as weather.
What to do with the label
If someone says you have Shani dosha, ask which Saturn. Birth house, or transit. Then ask the lordships. Saturday charity and service are cultural responses to Saturn. They do not move natal Saturn and they do not end a transit early. The useful work is to name the house and live that house's duty without the panic the word dosha was built to sell.
Frequently asked questions
Is Saturn in the 7th Shani dosha?
It is Saturn in the marriage house, which delays and cools. Whether it is a 'dosha' depends on lordship. For Tula lagna Saturn rules the 4th and 5th and is yogakaraka even in the 7th.
Does every Makara Moon have Sade Sati?
No. Sade Sati requires transiting Saturn in the signs immediately around the Moon and on the Moon. A Makara Moon has it only while Saturn actually transits Dhanu, Makara, or Kumbha.
Can I have natal Saturn trouble and not Sade Sati?
Yes. The birth placement is permanent. The transit comes and goes. They are separate events that sometimes overlap.
