How Gemstones Work in Astrology
A stone is not a charm with its own wish. It is a prop for the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, or Ketu.

One stone, one graha
Gemstones in astrology work as substitutes for a graha's strength, and the map is the navaratna, which would be false if pearl were assigned to Saturn or ruby to the Moon. Ruby is the Sun, pearl the Moon, red coral Mars, emerald Mercury, yellow sapphire Jupiter, diamond Venus, blue sapphire Saturn, hessonite Rahu, and cat's eye Ketu. The idea is sympathetic: the stone of a weak but welcome graha is worn so that graha's significations have support. It is not a battery that creates events the dasha refuses. If Mercury is not the lord you need, emerald does not become a study pill. If Venus is a functional malefic for the lagna, diamond does not become a love charm. The mechanism starts and ends with the graha.
Dignity and functional role
A graha can be weak by sign and still be the wrong one to strengthen. Debilitation, such as Jupiter in Capricorn or Venus in Virgo, shows weakness of dignity. Functional malefic status shows that the graha rules the 6th, the 8th, or the 12th for that lagna. Both can be true, and they ask for different caution. A weak lagna lord who rules only good houses is the clearest candidate. A weak 8th lord is a candidate for leaving alone. Neecha bhanga, cancellation, is a chart condition and does not come from the gem. People sometimes wear the stone of a fallen graha hoping to patch the fall. The patch, if it does anything, is comfort for that graha's topics. The sign of debilitation does not change.
Time is the dasha, not a shop's promise
The period in which a gem can matter is the Vimshottari mahadasha or antardasha of its graha. Saturn's stone during Saturn's 19 years has a long window. The Sun's ruby during the Sun's 6 years has a short one. Claims that a gem 'starts working in forty days' are not a dasha calculation, and this page will not repeat a day count. The birth time decides which lord is running, because the balance of the first dasha depends on how far the Moon has traveled in its nakshatra. Without that, there is no way to know whether the stone matches the years being lived. How gemstones work, when they work, is as a matched prop. How they fail is as a purchase made from a rashi poster.
Frequently asked questions
Do gems emit a force that changes planets?
The traditional claim is correspondence, not a measured force. The stone is worn for its graha. Nothing in the chart moves to a new sign because a ring was bought.
What is an uparatna?
A substitute, such as red spinel where ruby is not used, or yellow topaz where yellow sapphire is not used. The substitute still refers to the same graha. It is not a free pass to skip the chart.
Can two gems be worn together?
Only if both grahas are justified and they are not enemies whose strength you do not want at the same time. Two stones are two judgements, not a set.
