How Panch Mahapurush Yoga Is Formed
A Panch Mahapurush yoga forms when Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, or Saturn occupies a kendra, the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th, in its own sign or its exaltation sign. Mars gives Ruchaka, Mercury Bhadra, Jupiter Hamsa, Venus Malavya, Saturn Sasa. The Sun and the Moon are excluded. Rahu and Ketu are excluded.

The five qualifying placements
Ruchaka: Mars in a kendra in Mesha, Vrishchika, or Makara, where Makara is exaltation. Bhadra: Mercury in a kendra in Mithuna or Kanya. Kanya is also Mercury's exaltation, so a kendra Mercury in Kanya qualifies twice over by dignity and still once as Bhadra. Hamsa: Jupiter in a kendra in Dhanu, Meena, or Karka. Malavya: Venus in a kendra in Vrishabha, Tula, or Meena. Sasa: Saturn in a kendra in Makara, Kumbha, or Tula. A graha in its own sign in the 2nd or the 5th is dignified and is not this yoga, because those houses are not kendras. A debilitated graha in a kendra is the opposite of the requirement.
Kendra from the lagna
The kendra is counted from the lagna in the usual statement of this yoga. Jupiter in a kendra from the Moon is Gajakesari, a different yoga, even if someone calls every angular Jupiter a Hamsa. Hamsa needs the lagna angle and the right sign. A chart can hold both, or one, or neither. The lagna that makes the sign a kendra is specific. Mars in Makara is Ruchaka only if Makara is the 1st, 4th, 7th, or 10th. That means the lagna is Makara, Tula, Karka, or Mesha. Other lagnas can host an exalted Mars that is simply not angular. Exaltation alone is not the Mahapurush.
The dasha and the second lordship
The yoga speaks in the mahadasha of that graha: Mars 7 years, Mercury 17, Jupiter 16, Venus 20, Saturn 19. Outside it, you have a natal capacity. Each of these grahas also rules a second sign, except none of them is the Sun or Moon. Mars rules a dusthana for some of the lagnas that create Ruchaka. For Mesha, Mars in Makara is in the 10th, exalted, so Ruchaka forms, and Mars also rules the 8th. Say the yoga and the 8th. The name is not a purification. It is a strong angular graha in dignity, with whatever else it rules still attached.
Frequently asked questions
Can the Moon form a Mahapurush yoga?
No. The five are Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. The Moon has its own yogas, including Gajakesari when Jupiter is angular from the Moon.
Is exaltation in a trikona enough?
No. The house must be a kendra. A trikona placement can be excellent and still miss this particular name.
Does Ruchaka require Mars in Aries only?
Mesha or Vrishchika, the own signs, or Makara, the exaltation, and the sign must be a kendra from the lagna. One condition without the other fails the yoga.
