Relationships and Communication in the Chart

Communication in a relationship is Mercury's topic and the 3rd house's topic, and it becomes a marriage topic only when those factors join the 7th. The 2nd house is also speech, the family voice. A couple can have a sound 7th lord and a combust Mercury, so the bond exists and the sentences do not land. That split would be invisible if you only scored the sun signs as 'compatible communicators.' For Mesha lagna Mercury rules the 3rd and the 6th, so a loud Mercury can be both a talker and a quarrel, because the 6th is conflict. For Mithuna lagna Mercury is the lagna lord, and speech is closer to the self than to a technique. Understanding, if it means anything in the chart, is closer to Jupiter's aspect on the 7th or the Moon than to a workshop.

Mercury conjunct Mars can sharpen speech into attack. Mercury conjunct Saturn can slow it into withholding. Mercury in the 12th can make the important talks happen late, in private, or not at all. None of these is a moral verdict that someone is a bad partner. The 7th lord in the 3rd can show a spouse met through one's own initiative, or a marriage that runs on messages and short trips. The 3rd lord in the 7th brings the courage-house into the bond, which is useful when effort is needed and tiring when the effort never rests. A chatty birth chart and a fallen Mercury in Navamsa often feel like a person who talks well and does not feel understood. The remedy is not a universal emerald. Emerald strengthens Mercury, including a Mercury that rules the 6th.

You cannot enhance a marriage by enhancing a graha that is not in the conversation. If the 7th lord is Venus and Venus is silent, diamond is the stone people consider, and only when Venus is welcome. If the problem is purely Mercury and Mercury is a friend of the lagna, emerald is the closer upaya, during Mercury's period rather than as a permanent personality change. The mahadasha of Mercury lasts 17 years. A three-week transit of Mercury retrograde revisits whatever house it crosses and is not a reason to buy the stone. Listening is not in the chart. The chart can show a slow Saturn on the 3rd or the 7th, which means understanding arrives late and by repetition. It cannot make either person practise. Use the houses to see whether you are dealing with a speech graha or a spouse graha. Then talk from that distinction, instead of from a compatibility label.
