Why a Navratna Is Nine Decisions

A navratna sets nine gemstones for nine grahas, yet a single stone is worn only after the chart names the planet. The nine are ruby for the Sun, pearl for the Moon, red coral for Mars, emerald for Mercury, yellow sapphire for Jupiter, diamond for Venus, blue sapphire for Saturn, hessonite for Rahu, and cat's eye for Ketu. Ruby is the stone most often placed at the center, because the Sun is placed at the center of the set. The surrounding order varies by jeweler and by region, and a page should not invent a compass that your goldsmith will then treat as scripture. What does not vary is the risk. The moment all nine are on the hand, every graha has been invited, including the one that rules your 6th house of conflict and debt and the one that rules the 8th of sudden change.

Start from the Lahiri lagna. Name the house you care about: the 10th for career, the 7th and the D9 Navamsa for marriage, the 5th for children. Name that house's lord and whether the Vimshottari dasha already running gives him a bhukti. Then, and only then, look up his stone. If the answer is 'none of them this year,' wear none. A navratna is sometimes defended as balance, a way to keep the grahas from jealousy. Balance is not what happens when a yogakaraka and an 8th lord are amplified by the same ring. Saturn's blue sapphire inside a navratna is the usual regret, because Saturn does not do small things. If your chart has named Saturn as lagna lord and the dasha is his, a single sapphire is a clearer decision than nine stones that hide him in a circle.

Gold is the customary metal for a Sun-centered piece. It does not authenticate the gems. A navratna of glass with one real pearl is a piece of jewelry, not a remedy. Read the species of each stone or do not call the set navratna. Substitutes, white sapphire for diamond, are budget choices and should be labeled. They do not become the classical correspondence because they sit in the Venus socket. The wearing method, if one stone survives the test, is the weekday of that graha and a period you can review when the bhukti ends. Take the ring off the conversation when the chapter ends. A lifetime navratna bought at a wedding, with no lagna calculated, is a gift. Call it a gift. Do not call it jyotish.
