The Nine Gems and the Nine Grahas

The navaratna assignment is one stone for one graha. Ruby is the Sun, pearl the Moon, red coral Mars, emerald Mercury, yellow sapphire Jupiter, diamond Venus, blue sapphire Saturn, hessonite Rahu, and cat's eye Ketu. The stone follows the graha. The graha's houses, counted from the lagna, decide whether feeding it is wise.

Pairs, not wishes

A wish for money does not select yellow sapphire unless Jupiter rules the 2nd or the 11th for your lagna. For Dhanu, Jupiter rules the 1st and the 4th, so the stone is about the person and the home. For Karka, Jupiter rules the 6th and the 9th, so the stone mixes debt with fortune. A wish for marriage does not select diamond unless you have decided to feed Venus, the karaka, knowing Venus may rule a dusthana. The list is short on purpose. There is not a tenth stone for 'success' in general. Success in the chart is the 10th lord, who might be any of the nine.

Rahu and Ketu are on the list and off the lordship table

Hessonite and cat's eye are included even though Rahu and Ketu own no rashi on the seven-lord list. You judge them by the house they occupy and by the sign lord who disposits them. Wearing hessonite because Rahu is 'always foreign' feeds Rahu in whatever house he actually has, including the 8th. Wearing cat's eye because Ketu is 'spiritual' feeds a node that may sit in the 7th. The pair list tells you the mineral. It does not tell you the house. Look at the house before you look at a catalog.

Metal and weekday are handling, not a bypass

Stones are customarily set for their graha and first worn on that graha's weekday: Sunday for ruby, Monday for pearl, and so on through Saturday for blue sapphire. Those rules assume you already chose the graha. They do not rescue a dusthana lord you put on by mistake. A cracked, unknown red stone is not automatically coral or ruby. Coral is Mars. Ruby is the Sun. Identify the mineral. Then identify the lordship. The dasha will still belong to its own lord. A gem does not switch mahadashas.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a gem for the lagna itself?

The gem of the lagna lord. That lord is Mars for Mesha and Vrishchika, Venus for Vrishabha and Tula, Mercury for Mithuna and Kanya, the Moon for Karka, the Sun for Simha, Jupiter for Dhanu and Meena, Saturn for Makara and Kumbha.

Do Rahu and Ketu share Saturn's stone?

No. Saturn is blue sapphire. Rahu is hessonite. Ketu is cat's eye. Saturday is often used for all three in remedial custom because the nodes have no weekday of their own. The minerals stay distinct.

Can one stone cover two wishes?

Only if one graha rules both houses you care about. Otherwise you are feeding one office and hoping. Write the lordships down first.
