Raja Yoga: Kendra Lord with Trikona Lord
A raja yoga joins a kendra lord, houses 1, 4, 7, or 10, with a trikona lord, houses 1, 5, or 9. The join is conjunction, mutual aspect, or an exchange of signs. The 1st lord counts on both lists.

Why the lagna lord is always eligible
The 1st is the only house that is both a kendra and a trikona. Its lord can complete a raja yoga by meeting any other kendra lord or any other trikona lord. For Mesha lagna, Mars rules the 1st and the 8th. Mars meeting Jupiter, lord of the 9th, links the lagna lord with a trikona lord. Mars meeting Saturn, lord of the 10th, links the lagna lord with a kendra lord. Both are raja yogas, and they describe different rooms: dharma in the first case, public work in the second. The yoga is the link, not a crown painted on the lagna.
Exchange, aspect, and conjunction are not equal in strength
Conjunction puts both lords in one sign, so the house they share becomes the stage. Mutual aspect connects them while they occupy different houses, and each still has to be read in its own sign. Exchange, parivartana, puts each lord in the other's sign, so each carries the other's house. A 9th lord sitting in the 10th while the 10th lord sits in the 9th is the famous form of that exchange. Dignity still applies. A raja yoga whose lords are debilitated, or locked in the 8th under malefics, is a yoga with friction. The name does not guarantee a throne.
The dasha is the switch
The yoga speaks in the mahadasha or antardasha of one of the lords that form it. A beautiful link between the 5th lord and the 4th lord stays natal during a long Saturn period if Saturn is neither lord. Venus mahadasha lasts 20 years, Saturn 19, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16. If one of those is a yoga lord, that stretch is the audible part. Counting raja yogas in a chart without asking which lord is running produces a pile of titles and no calendar.
Frequently asked questions
Does every chart have a raja yoga?
Many charts have at least a weak link between some kendra lord and some trikona lord, because aspect reaches far. Strength, dignity, and the dasha decide whether anyone would notice it.
Is the 1st lord with the 7th lord a raja yoga?
The 1st lord is a trikona lord as well as a kendra lord. The 7th lord is a kendra lord. Their conjunction qualifies. It also sits on the marriage axis, so the yoga and the 7th-house story are read together.
Do dusthana lords cancel it?
They complicate it. A trikona lord who also rules the 8th or 12th brings that dusthana into the yoga. Note the second lordship. Do not drop the yoga, and do not ignore the second house.
