Chhath Puja and the Sun

Shashthi is the sixth lunar day. The vow is famous in Bihar and across the eastern plains, standing in water with the Sun. It is solar worship, not a 12-sign forecast.

The sixth tithi and the Sun

Chhath Puja is a vow to the Sun on Kartik Shukla Shashthi, and a ruby for that Sun is worn only after the chart names the Sun. Shashthi means the sixth lunar day of the bright fortnight of Kartik, a few days after Diwali. The observance is a strict fast and a standing offering to the setting Sun and, the next dawn, to the rising Sun, classically at a river or a tank. It is rooted in the Gangetic east, especially Bihar, and it is now kept far from there by families who carried it. The civil dates move. This page does not invent them. The deity of the vow is the Sun himself, Surya, not a sign and not a weekday horoscope.

How a chart would use the vow

The Sun in a birth chart rules Leo and signifies vitality, authority, and the father. A Chhath fast as a remedy fits a Sun the Lahiri chart has named: the lagna lord for Leo, the 10th lord when Leo is tenth, or the dasha lord when the Vimshottari period is solar. It does not fit every person who wants a promotion. Career remains the 10th house and its lord even during the festival week. The father is the Sun's karaka role and often the 9th house. A vow kept for a parent's wellbeing is devotion. It is not a medical outcome, and a physician remains the authority for a body. Health claims sold around the standing-in-water rite should be refused. The water is part of the worship. It is not a treatment.

Ruby is a different decision

People leave Chhath and are told to buy ruby because they just worshipped the Sun. The worship does not name the planet for a stone. If the Sun rules the 6th, the 8th, or the 12th, ruby turns those houses up. Leo is the 6th from a Pisces lagna, the 8th from a Capricorn lagna, and the 12th from a Virgo lagna. Those three should not be handed a stone on the strength of a festival. Sunday and a simple solar remembrance are available all year if the chart did name the Sun. The Shashthi vow is annual and strenuous. Keep it if it is yours, with the dietary care your doctor allows, and leave the gem shop for a day when someone has opened your lagna and said the Sun's name for a reason you can repeat.

Frequently asked questions

Is Chhath only a Bihar festival?

Its heartland is Bihar and the neighboring plains. Households elsewhere keep it when it is their family vow. The tithi does not change with the city.

Does it fall on a Sunday by rule?

It falls on Kartik Shukla Shashthi, whatever weekday that tithi is. Sunday is the Sun's weekday and is a separate custom.

Can the fast cure a Sun-related illness?

No cure is available from the vow. The 6th house can describe illness patterns. A doctor handles the illness. The fast is worship for those who can safely keep it.
