Types of Gemstones and Their Grahas
Each navaratna has one graha. Significance is that link, plus the sign where the graha is exalted or fallen, not a mood the stone is said to attract.

The seven visible grahas
The primary types are the seven stones of the seven visible grahas, and each significance is a planet rather than a wish. Ruby is the Sun, exalted in Aries and fallen in Libra, for authority and the father. Pearl is the Moon, exalted in Taurus and fallen in Scorpio, for the mind and the mother. Red coral is Mars, exalted in Capricorn and fallen in Cancer, for courage and conflict. Emerald, panna, is Mercury, exalted in Virgo and fallen in Pisces, for speech and trade. Yellow sapphire is Jupiter, exalted in Cancer and fallen in Capricorn, for wisdom, children, and wealth. Diamond is Venus, exalted in Pisces and fallen in Virgo, for union and comfort. Blue sapphire is Saturn, exalted in Libra and fallen in Aries, for structure, delay, and service. Swapping any pair, pearl for Saturn or coral for Jupiter, breaks the set.
The two nodal stones
Hessonite, gomed, is Rahu. Cat's eye, lehsunia, is Ketu. They are part of the nine and they are the stones treated with the most caution, because the nodes are not natural benefics with a clean exaltation story in the same seven-sign table. Rahu amplifies obsession, foreignness, and the house it occupies. Ketu cuts, detaches, and pulls toward moksha or toward loss of interest. Wearing their gems to 'open intuition' skips the house the node already occupies at birth. A Ketu in the 12th is a different life from a Ketu in the 10th. The stone does not choose the house. People who want a single protective gem usually do not want a node. The lagna lord is the quieter place to look.
Types that are not navaratnas
Opal, spinel, turquoise, and quartz are not the nine. Red spinel can stand in for ruby, yellow topaz for yellow sapphire, and similar uparatnas exist for the others. Their significance is borrowed from the graha, and it disappears if the seller assigns them by mood: peace, passion, prosperity. Birthstones keyed to a civil month are a different list again, Western and monthly, and they do not match this one. March does not own aquamarine in a kundli. The sidereal Sun's sign in that month is still not a gem key. Use the nine as a dictionary. Then ask whether the graha rules a house you should strengthen. The dictionary is not a prescription.
Frequently asked questions
How many classical astrological gems are there?
Nine. Seven for Sun through Saturn, plus hessonite for Rahu and cat's eye for Ketu. Other stones are substitutes or unrelated jewelry.
Which gem is for Jupiter?
Yellow sapphire. Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and debilitated in Capricorn. The stone does not change that sign.
Are Rahu and Ketu given exaltation signs here?
The clean exaltation and debilitation pairs above belong to the seven grahas. The nodal stones are still worn only for Rahu or Ketu, and only with caution.
