Birth Rashi and the Lagna

In everyday Jyotish, birth rashi means the sign of the Moon, the janma rashi. The Moon is the mind, the public mood used for rashifal, and the nakshatra that starts Vimshottari. The lagna is the rising sign, the first house of the self, and it changes about every two hours. They match only when the Moon happens to occupy the rising sign. Most charts have two signs, and the life is not the Moon's sign alone. The tenth house of career can be neither of them. Asking the birth rashi for a profession skips the tenth lord.

It affects how feelings run, which graha's nakshatras time the life, and how transits are counted in the lunar system, including Sade Sati from the Moon. It does not replace the seventh house of marriage or the second of wealth and speech. A strong Moon in Taurus, its exaltation, steadies the mind.
