Classical Books for Learning Jyotish

Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra is the large Parashari source for houses, lords, and yogas. Brihat Jataka, by Varahamihira, is the tighter classical treatise on natal judgment. Phaladeepika, by Mantreswara, is a later manual that states yogas and results in a form students can check. Saravali, by Kalyana Varma, and Jataka Parijata, by Vaidyanatha, belong on the same shelf. None of them contains your future as a chapter. They contain rules. Your Moon nakshatra starts Vimshottari. The book does not know that nakshatra until a chart is cast.

The first house is the self. The seventh is marriage. The tenth is career. The eighth is longevity. The twelfth is loss and foreign residence. A book that helps you understand a life will keep returning to those portfolios and to the lord's dasha. A book that promises the future from a sun sign is not in this stack. Lahiri ayanamsa is a modern computational choice for placing the rashis. The medieval texts assume a sidereal frame. They do not print today's transits.

Swiss Ephemeris and a birth time make the rules testable. Jyothish SI casts the kundli under Lahiri so a sentence in Phaladeepika can be checked against a house instead of admired.
