A Strong Mercury
A strong Mercury is exalted in Virgo, rules Gemini and Virgo, and supports discrimination and the second house of wealth and speech. That dignity is not the same fact as a cancelled debility.
Exaltation and own signs
Mercury is exalted in Virgo and debilitated in Pisces. It owns Gemini and Virgo. In Virgo it is both at home and exalted, which is why a clean Mercury there is the textbook strong Mercury, provided it is not deeply combust. Combustion, closeness to the Sun, can mute even a dignified Mercury. Budha-Aditya yoga is the conjunction itself and still has to be checked for that muting. Strength shows in speech, accounts, study, and trade. The second house is wealth and speech. Mercury connected to it makes the strength audible and financial.
The houses it rules
For a Gemini lagna, Mercury is the first house of the self and also rules the fourth house of home. For a Virgo lagna, Mercury is the lagna lord and rules the tenth house of career. Strength then helps the self and the vocation together. For other lagnas Mercury may rule the sixth of conflict and debt or the eighth of longevity, and strength is less automatically welcome. A benefit is not a universal compliment. It depends on lordship. The fifth house is children and the planning mind. A strong Mercury there helps study. It does not define every lagna's Mercury as lucky.
Seventeen years of use
Mercury mahadasha lasts 17 years. That is when a strong Mercury pays tuition, contracts, and skill. A weak Mercury in the same period produces clever errors. The benefit is natal dignity meeting the timer, not a personality type. Lahiri sidereal Virgo is the exaltation sign. A tropical Virgo Mercury may be sidereal Leo, which is neither own sign nor exaltation. Do not import the benefit from the wrong zodiac.
Frequently asked questions
Where is Mercury exalted?
In Virgo. It is debilitated in Pisces and owns Gemini and Virgo. Combustion by the Sun can still mute it.
Is strength always a benefit?
Not if Mercury rules difficult houses for the lagna, such as the sixth of conflict and debt. Lordship comes before the compliment.
How long is Mercury mahadasha?
Seventeen years. The benefit shows then, if the natal Mercury is actually strong under Lahiri.
