Start with the ascendant and the birth time. The Sun sign is one graha. It is not the chart.

Time, place, and the lagna

A beginner's horoscope in this tradition is a sidereal kundli using the Lahiri ayanamsa, and the first fact is the lagna, which changes about every two hours. That makes the birth time and the birth city mandatory. The city is geocoded, and the zone offset in minutes is applied before the Julian day. Where clocks observe daylight saving, the offset in summer is not the offset in winter, and the lagna can change with it. India uses Asia/Kolkata the whole year, with no daylight saving. A chart drawn from a date alone has only the Sun's sign to offer, and even that sign differs between a tropical birthday column and a Lahiri Sun. Jyothish SI casts this sidereal chart with Swiss Ephemeris. A free account can generate the kundli. The nine grahas are then placed in signs from that verified instant, not from a personality quiz.

Houses and grahas do different jobs

Twelve houses are counted from the lagna. The 1st is the self, the 2nd wealth, the 4th home, the 5th children and intelligence, the 6th conflict and debt, the 7th marriage, the 8th rupture and shared resources, the 9th dharma, the 10th career, the 11th gains, and the 12th loss and rest. The grahas are the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu. A house can be empty. Its lord still speaks. Venus is the wife karaka in a man's chart and Jupiter the husband karaka in a woman's, but both still use the 7th. Career does not move to Venus just because Venus is pleasant. It stays with the 10th lord. Beginners mix karakas with houses and then think every topic has a favourite planet and no bhava. The bhava is the topic. The graha is the actor.

The clock of the life

Timing is Vimshottari, counted from the lord of the Moon's nakshatra. The order is Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19, and Mercury 17, a 120-year cycle. The first period is only the remaining balance of the birth nakshatra, so two people in 'Jupiter dasha' may have different years left. D9, the Navamsa, is the division used to check the spouse and the grahas' deeper strength. It is not a second sun sign. Remedies, gems, and mantras come after this structure, and only for a graha the chart wants stronger. A beginner who buys a stone before knowing the lagna has skipped the guide. Learn the lagna, the house of the question, and the dasha lord. Everything noisier can wait.

Frequently asked questions

What do I need to cast a chart?

Date, exact time, and city of birth. The city fixes the zone, including daylight saving where it applies. A date without a time cannot give a trustworthy lagna.

Is the Sun sign the horoscope?

The Sun is one graha. The horoscope is the lagna plus all nine grahas and the twelve houses. A Lahiri Sun often sits in a different sign from a tropical birthday.

What is a dasha?

A Vimshottari period ruled by the nakshatra lord at birth, then by the next lords in a fixed order. It is how the chart times events.
