Why Incense Is Offered in Puja
A puja without scent has skipped one of the standard honours. The stick is not a planet, and it does not change the lagna.

Dhoop among the upacharas
Incense matters in puja because dhoop is one of the classical offerings, grouped with the five common upacharas: gandha, fragrance as paste, pushpa, flowers, dhoop, incense, deepa, the lamp, and naivedya, food. The sixteen upacharas expand the same idea. Dhoop is the smoke that carries scent, distinct from chandan, which is sandal paste applied cool to the deity, and distinct from the flame. That distinction would collapse if incense were called the tilak. The offering is to the deity of the rite, Shiva on a Monday, the Devi through Navratri, Hanuman on a Tuesday, not to the worshipper's sun sign. A fragrant house is not a strong 9th house. The 9th can describe a person who keeps worship. The incense does not create the 9th lord.
Scent is not a remedial gem
Shops assign aromas to planets: a resin for Saturn, a sweet stick for Venus. Those assignments are not the navaratna system, and this page will not list them as rules. If a family has a scent for a deity, that is custom. It does not strengthen the graha the way a justified mantra or a justified gem is asked to. Burning incense during a Saturn mahadasha does not shorten the 19 years. It marks the hour of prayer inside those years. Poor ventilation and a heavy stick can bother the breath. That is a practical matter, not an astrological side effect, and it is not a medical diagnosis. People with sensitive lungs can offer flowers and a lamp and still have performed puja. The upachara is an honour. It is not a health treatment and not a substitute for the missing birth time.
Keep the offering in its place
Use incense as dhoop when you are actually at worship, on the tithi or weekday the rite belongs to, rather than as a permanent air freshener that is supposed to fix the chart. A Navratri evening, a Tuesday Mangal lamp, a Shravan Monday: the smoke belongs to those hours if you use it. It does not choose a muhurta. It does not identify the 7th lord. If the question that brought you to puja is marriage or work, the incense will not answer it. Read the house, then sit down to the offering you know. The blessing in the aromatic act is the act of offering, one item in a short sequence of honours. Five honest upacharas, or even a lamp and a flower, outweigh a catalogue of planetary scents with no deity and no chart.
Frequently asked questions
What is dhoop in the list of offerings?
The incense or smoke offering. Beside it are sandal paste, flowers, the lamp, and food, in the simple five-upachara set.
Does a scent match each planet?
Not in the navaratna tradition used here. Family custom may prefer a scent for a deity. That custom is not a gem and not a dasha.
Is incense required for a valid puja?
It is one honour. A lamp and flowers already constitute a real offering. Discomfort with smoke is a reason to skip the stick, not a reason to skip worship.
