Vedic astrology for a Markham birth north of Toronto
In Markham, vedic astrology times the birth on America/Toronto, and daylight saving applies in this city north of Toronto. Markham does not sit on a separate zone from Toronto, so the America/Toronto daylight saving offset is the one used, and the city name stays Markham. North of the larger city is not a new clock. Locate Markham, and apply the offset in minutes before the Julian day.

North of Toronto, same seasonal rule
Markham observes daylight saving because America/Toronto does. A summer birth uses the daylight saving offset. A winter birth uses the standard offset. No extra minutes are added for being north. The lagna changes if the season is wrong, not because the city sits above Toronto on a map. Lahiri ayanamsa and Swiss Ephemeris take the civil instant only.
Keep Markham off the Toronto line of the form
Writing Toronto locates Toronto. The zone string will still say America/Toronto, and the birthplace will be wrong. Scarborough and Mississauga are other names on this zone, not replacements. Marriage is read from the 7th house, its lord, and D9 Navamsa. Career is read from the 10th house and its lord.

Frequently asked questions
Does Markham use a zone north of Toronto?
No. Vedic astrology in Markham uses America/Toronto, with daylight saving. The city has no zone of its own. The certificate name stays Markham.
Is daylight saving observed in Markham?
Yes. The daylight saving offset of America/Toronto is applied in summer, in minutes, before the Julian day. Winter uses the standard offset of that zone.
Why not call the birth city Toronto?
Because a Markham certificate is not a Toronto birth. They share America/Toronto and daylight saving. They do not share a place name for the chart to locate.
