Vedic astrology in Madurai, including the name Madura
Cards that still print Madura are Madurai births, and vedic astrology reads them in Indian Standard Time without a summer alteration. The zone is Asia/Kolkata, UTC plus 5 hours 30 minutes, all year. Chennai is a different city. It is west of the Mirzapur meridian, with solar noon after 12:00, and that fact stays there. A Madurai birth is not moved to the coast because the family later describes itself as Tamil to someone abroad.

Old print, current city
Transcribe the time as printed, including morning or evening, and enter Madurai. If you test the spelling Madura, keep the time identical. A difference in the lagna means a difference in the digits or a geocoder miss, not a historical time zone hiding in the old name. India is not applying daylight saving on either spelling.
Tamil is not a city field
On a form overseas, people type Chennai, or the new city, because Madurai did not autocomplete. Both are substitutes. Chennai shares Asia/Kolkata and nothing else you should copy. The new city may observe daylight saving and will apply a different offset before the Julian day. The delivery room used Indian Standard Time in Madurai.
The dasha is not the temple calendar
Festivals in the city are not birth times. The Vimshottari dasha already running is counted from the recorded instant on a sidereal chart, Lahiri ayanamsa, Swiss Ephemeris. Marriage is the 7th house, its lord, and D9. A free account can generate the Kundli and chat. The sacred geography does not fill in a blank hour.

Frequently asked questions
Does vedic astrology put Madura and Madurai on different clocks?
No. Madura is an older spelling of Madurai. Both mean Asia/Kolkata, with no daylight saving. Keep the recorded time.
Is Madurai close enough to use Chennai's solar noon?
No. Chennai is west of the Mirzapur meridian, so solar noon there falls after 12:00. Madurai is its own city on Indian Standard Time.
What if the card has a time but no morning or evening mark?
You have two possible hours. Label them. Do not choose the Madurai lagna that sounds better, and do not fix the gap by changing the city.
